{"id":3122,"date":"2008-04-21T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-21T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/guv-says-special-session-in-may-isnt-likely\/"},"modified":"2008-04-21T13:30:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-21T19:30:00","slug":"guv-says-special-session-in-may-isnt-likely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/guv-says-special-session-in-may-isnt-likely\/","title":{"rendered":"Guv says special session in May isn&#8217;t likely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SAzrt48uGPI\/AAAAAAAAFhM\/O4g_c2i4e-U\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/SAzrt48uGPI\/AAAAAAAAFhM\/O4g_c2i4e-U\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191783644065044722\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> now says he won\u2019t likely call a special session until late in the summer after he had productive meetings with two Senate leaders last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> met with Senate President <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=267\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Jennings<\/a>, D-Roswell, and Senate Finance Chair <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=288&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">John Arthur Smith<\/a>, D-Deming, in separate meetings last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe governor is leaning toward a special session later in the summer following productive meetings last week with Sen. Jennings and Sen. Smith,\u201d Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said today. \u201cThe governor came away from those meetings with the belief that there is a desire to move forward with negotiations that will result in universal health coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">During this year\u2019s legislative session, the House approved <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s universal health-care plan after rewriting it, but the Senate was unwilling to consider the proposal. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said immediately following the session that he would call a special session to address universal health care. After a meeting with Senate leaders in February, he said the special session would most likely be held late in the summer to give the Senate and his staff time to work out a plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said earlier this month he was disappointed with the lack of progress from an ad-hoc Senate committee and was considering calling a special session in May \u2013 weeks before several legislators are facing challenges in the June 3 primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Following <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s threat, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Jennings<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said he believes that \u201cevery New Mexican deserves to be able to get good, affordable health care when they need it,\u201d but said \u201cthe reforms necessary to achieve that goal are quite complex and need to be worked out over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Smith said he wants to enact universal health care but doesn\u2019t know whether the state can afford it. He said he wants to wait until new revenue forecasts are released in June before proceeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Both said the Senate committee has met twice and is planning future meetings on universal health care.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
