{"id":3116,"date":"2008-04-18T09:19:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-18T15:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/n-m-among-bush-states-that-could-go-to-dems-in-08\/"},"modified":"2008-04-18T09:19:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-18T15:19:00","slug":"n-m-among-bush-states-that-could-go-to-dems-in-08","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/n-m-among-bush-states-that-could-go-to-dems-in-08\/","title":{"rendered":"N.M. among Bush states that could go to Dems in &#8217;08"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a> blogger is ranking <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> this week as the third most likely state to switch from Republican to Democrat or vice versa in the presidential race this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Fix\u2019s Chris Cillizza writes in <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.washingtonpost.com\/thefix\/2008\/04\/the_line_these_states_in_play.html\" target=\"_blank\">a post<\/a> today that, though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/president\" target=\"_blank\">President Bush<\/a> won <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in 2004, either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> will be favored over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John McCain<\/a> in November. That comes despite a <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/mccain-tops-both-dems-in-new-poll-of-nm.html\">SurveyUSA poll<\/a> released Thursday that has McCain leading both Democratic presidential candidates in potential head-to-head match-ups in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cillizza refers to <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state>\u2019s open Senate seat and three open House seats, saying \u201cno state has more competitive contests at the federal level than the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">Land<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">Enchantment<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>.\u201d That \u201clevel of fluidity\u201d means millions of dollars will pour into the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMcCain (an <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Arizona<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> senator) gives Republicans a fighting chance in the state due to his neighbor appeal, but the state has been trending Democratic of late and either Clinton or Obama will be favored in the fall,\u201d Cillizza wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s five electoral votes went to Bush in 2004 after he beat <a href=\"http:\/\/kerry.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Kerry<\/a> by about 1 percent.
