{"id":31146,"date":"2011-08-16T13:01:06","date_gmt":"2011-08-16T19:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=31146"},"modified":"2011-08-17T08:07:39","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T14:07:39","slug":"lujan-grisham-enters-congressional-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/08\/lujan-grisham-enters-congressional-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Lujan Grisham enters congressional race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_31147\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31147\" title=\"Lujan Grisham, Michelle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Lujan-Grisham-Michelle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bernalillo County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/michellelujangrisham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/a> jumped into the 1st Congressional District Democratic primary today, setting up a three-way contest that also includes former Albuquerque Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/martychavez.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Ch\u00e1vez<\/a> and State Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/griegoforcongress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Griego<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m running for Congress because we are under attack in this country,\u201d Lujan Grisham said in remarks released to the media. \u201cA band of right-wing radicals in Congress has hijacked our country and put the interests of their corporate masters ahead of the middle class, seniors and the most vulnerable among us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The former cabinet secretary for the departments of Health and Aging said the economy is \u201ccrumbling, health care is becoming more expensive and inaccessible and our families are struggling to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress\u2019 answer to this has been to cut investments in our people while preserving tax breaks for oil companies and billionaire hedge-fund managers,\u201d she said. \u201cWorst of all, they have proposed dramatic cuts in Medicaid \u2013 which over 500,000 New Mexicans depend on \u2013 and, even worse, they would end Medicare as we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am running for Congress because we need to stop the insanity,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople need a champion to fight against these extreme policies and instead focus on creating more jobs.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Lujan Grisham ran for Congress in 2008, but finished third in the Democratic primary. Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/heinrich.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a> went on to win the seat, which he\u2019s now giving up to run for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>As a widow, single mother and caregiver, Lujan Grisham said she has \u201cpersonally dealt with the everyday problems that real people face.\u201d She said she has spent her career advocating \u201cfor those who cannot fight for themselves \u2013 from senior citizens and the disabled to children and those without health insurance. I have always worked for people and not the powerful and connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Republican side, Albuquerque City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danlewis2012.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Lewis<\/a> and former State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janice2012.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a> are running.
