Smith<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/07\/lanier-announces-candidacy-for-cruces-city-council\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clinton Lanier<\/a> in the race to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/las-cruces.org\/Government\/Legislative\/City%20Council\/District%202.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Dolores Connor<\/a>, who is giving up the seat to run for mayor. The election is Nov. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Scholz is running on a platform of \u201cprogress, preservation and participation,\u201d according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to change, and we need a vision to guide our progress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Scholz has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for five years and chaired the board for four. He\u2019s vice chair of the 2040 Commission and helped write the \u201cOne Valley One Vision\u201d report.<\/p>\n<p>Scholz said he\u2019s acutely aware of the issues the city faces and wants to give back to the community that has been his home for many years. He said Las Cruces is a \u201cgreat place to live, work, and retire. We need to continue to improve our quality of life so people will come here and stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scholz is a member of the committee working on access to the new Centennial High School.
