{"id":3060,"date":"2008-04-02T16:17:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-02T22:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/controversy-over-guvs-endorsement-continues\/"},"modified":"2008-04-02T16:17:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-02T22:17:00","slug":"controversy-over-guvs-endorsement-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/04\/controversy-over-guvs-endorsement-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversy over guv&#8217;s endorsement continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R_QGTYV6MhI\/AAAAAAAAFZQ\/cx6rYHhfbm0\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R_QGTYV6MhI\/AAAAAAAAFZQ\/cx6rYHhfbm0\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184776001031909906\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> has been unable to get away from the controversy surrounding his endorsement of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>, so he confronted it head-on in a Tuesday op-ed published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/04\/01\/AR2008040100885_pf.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Today another newspaper revealed a weekend meeting where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_clinton\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Clinton<\/a> expressed his anger at <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> for endorsing Obama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the Post op-ed, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> ripped into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> supporter <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Carville\" target=\"_blank\">James Carville<\/a>, who has compared <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s endorsement of Obama to Judas\u2019 betrayal of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWhile I certainly will not stoop to the low level of Mr. Carville, I feel compelled to defend myself against character assassination and baseless allegations,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wrote. \u201cCarville has made it very clear that this is a personal attack \u2013 driven by his own sense of what constitutes loyalty. It is this kind of political venom that I anticipated from certain <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> supporters and I campaigned against in my own run for president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> said he endorsed Obama because he represents the opposite, as someone who \u201chas the judgment, temperament and background to bridge our divisions as a nation and make <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> strong at home and respected in the world again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn my view, Sen. Obama represents our best hope of replacing division with unity. That is why, out of loyalty to my country, I endorse him for president,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">An article published today in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?file=\/c\/a\/2008\/04\/02\/BAVNVU2PJ.DTL&amp;type=printable\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> reveals an angry Bill Clinton starting off a tirade about the presidential race by saying <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> told him \u201cfive times to my face\u201d that he would never endorse Obama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> wrote in his Post article that he \u201cnever told anyone, including President Clinton, that I would\u201d endorse Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThose who said I did are misinformed or worse,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> has become a central figure in what has degraded into an ugly, ugly dogfight between Obama and Hillary Clinton. The governor wrote that he expects that will continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI do not believe that the truth will keep Carville and others from attacking me,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI can only say that we need to move on from the politics of personal insult and attacks.
