\"\"<\/a>John McCain<\/a> began running today what his campaign is calling the first television ad of the general-election season, and he picked New Mexicans to be the first voters to see it. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The decision to air the ad first in New Mexico further highlights the importance of the swing-state to the 2008 election and indicates that New Mexico is set to gain a lot more national attention in the coming months.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The ad is coinciding with the GOP presidential nominee\u2019s \u201cService to America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u201d tour, in which he will travel the nation next week to give a series of speeches that are designed to help the American public get to know him. McCain\u2019s schedule includes stops in Mississippi<\/st1:state>, Virginia<\/st1:state>, Maryland<\/st1:state>, Florida<\/st1:state> and Arizona<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n

Though McCain isn\u2019t scheduled to visit New Mexico next week, as I reported on Thursday<\/a>, his campaign manager, Rick Davis, will speak a week from today at the Republican National Committee\u2019s<\/a> 2008 state chairmen\u2019s meeting at the Santa Ana Pueblo near Bernalillo. One of McCain\u2019s top financial advisers, Carly Fiorina<\/a>, will also speak at the meeting on Thursday.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The 60-second ad is airing statewide beginning today, according to a news release<\/a> from the McCain campaign. The campaign chose to start the ad in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, according to the news release, because it is \u201can important battleground state.\u201d It will air in other states in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

The ad begins with McCain speaking to an enthusiastic crowd.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cKeep that faith. Keep your courage. Stick together. Stay strong. Do not yield. Stand up. We\u2019re Americans, and we\u2019ll never surrender,\u201d McCain says.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The ad, which is designed to introduce McCain as a war hero and tough would-be commander-in-chief, then goes to a narrator who suggests that a president must believe America<\/st1:country-region> and liberty and worth protecting, that America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s people are honorable and that its future is prosperous.<\/p>\n

The narrator also suggests that people must believe the president has \u201cwalked the walk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then it goes to now widely-viewed video of McCain being interviewed as a prisoner of war in Vietnam<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. He gives his rank and service number.<\/p>\n

The ad concludes with the narrator saying, \u201cJohn McCain. The American president Americans have been waiting for.\u201d<\/p>\n
