Though at least one attendee called it a \u201cSeinfeld news conference\u201d (that means it was about nothing), Attorney General Gary King<\/a> did talk about corruption cases and defend his record for 90 minutes on Friday.<\/p>\n

From the Albuquerque Journal<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a meandering, 90-minute news conference in Albuquerque, King offered lengthy defenses of his office\u2019s performance in three prominent cases while decrying the media for focusing its coverage on complaints from rival attorneys instead of positive work being done at his office.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From the Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeaking mostly from notes, King defended himself and his assistants in pursuing corruption cases, saying they had been more vigorous than any attorney general in New Mexico’s 99-year history.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said the media, by and large, had been too willing to accept unsubstantiated statements from defense lawyers who alleged conflicts and inconsistency by King and his staff.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And from Capitol Report New Mexico<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018We cannot base our cases based on gut feelings,\u2019 King said, adding that \u2018If we find evidence\u00a0of criminal activity, you can be assured we will bring that evidence to the appropriate authority or grand jury or to a district\u00a0court judge or whatever.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The news conference came after\u00a0an editorial<\/a> in which The Santa Fe New Mexican wrote that King has lately been \u201cdragging his public trust to political depths previously unplumbed\u201d with his handling of corruption cases and should consider \u201crecusing himself from office.\u201d<\/p>\n
