{"id":30138,"date":"2011-06-21T11:09:51","date_gmt":"2011-06-21T17:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=30138"},"modified":"2011-06-22T08:15:30","modified_gmt":"2011-06-22T14:15:30","slug":"criticism-is-off-the-mark-ag-spokesman-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/06\/criticism-is-off-the-mark-ag-spokesman-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Criticism is off the mark, AG spokesman says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14276\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14276 \" title=\"King, Gary\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/King-Gary-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/King-Gary-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/King-Gary.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attorney General Gary King (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/nmag.gov\/office\/Divisions\/EO\/kingbio.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Gary King<\/a> will \u201cpublicly address his critics\u2019 concerns very soon,\u201d his spokesman says, adding that criticism of King is off the mark and \u201cbased on obvious misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yes, these lies are hurtful to me,\u201d King spokesman Phil Sisneros wrote this morning on the <a href=\"http:\/\/nmago.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/what-really-stinks.html\" target=\"_blank\">Attorney General\u2019s Office blog<\/a>. \u201cNot just because I work for the Attorney General, but because I know the person he is and the real dedication he has for serving the people of New Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sisneros didn\u2019t go into specifics, leaving that for King to do at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/06\/paper-ag-playing-politics-should-consider-resigning\/\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote on Monday<\/a>, The Santa Fe New Mexican wrote in an editorial that King has lately been \u201cdragging his public trust to political depths previously unplumbed\u201d and should consider \u201crecusing himself from office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper says nobody is \u201cso naive as to think the position of New Mexico attorney general is above politics,\u201d but King\u2019s recent actions go beyond what\u2019s reasonable and are \u201ccertainly beneath his once-praiseworthy self.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The criticism comes from a newspaper that, a few months ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/opinion\/Our-views-Cool--honest-King-merits-second-term\" target=\"_blank\">endorsed King<\/a> in his re-election battle, writing that, \u201cWhen it comes to competence and honesty, few of our state\u2019s public servants can match Attorney General Gary King.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent situations have changed the minds of those who control the paper\u2019s editorial page.<\/p>\n<h3>King has long faced criticism<\/h3>\n<p>King has long faced criticism that he\u2019s soft on corruption and maybe even covering up for fellow Democrats. He\u2019s responded to specific allegations on <a href=\"http:\/\/nmago.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">the AG\u2019s blog<\/a> and guest columns published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/04\/an-update-on-corruption-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\">on this site<\/a> and elsewhere, but the criticism persists.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sisneros even claimed recently, in <a href=\"http:\/\/nmago.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/whistling-conflict-of-interest-tune.html\" target=\"_blank\">a blog posting<\/a>, that \u201cNo other NM Attorney General has ever been this involved in prosecuting corruption and investment fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s blog posting, Sisneros, a former radio personality, had harsh words for some in the media. He wrote that he \u201cmade a living for many years making fun of and criticizing politicians, most of it was just for laughs. My personal guideline though, was to try hard not to attack a person\u2019s character. Unfortunately, sometimes I went too far and immediately regretted what I said and I apologized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome in today\u2019s media are a different sort,\u201d he wrote. \u201cInnuendo, outright lies, and personal or corporate agendas serve as \u2018news\u2019 and \u2018commentary.\u2019 Individuals are publicly sliced and diced and ripped apart as if the \u2018commentary or opinion\u2019 were some sort of perverted macabre blood sport. There seems to be an increasingly pervasive media attitude that growls, \u2018Yeah, we ripped him good!
