Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diane_Denish\" target=\"_blank\">Diane Denish<\/a> says she\u2019s still considering running for the 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/heinrich.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still on the table,\u201d Denish told NMPolitics.net today.<\/p>\n<p>Several sources had told NMPolitics.net that Denish, a Democrat, decided against running, but they\u2019re apparently wrong.<\/p>\n<p>NMPolitics.net was the first to report in April that Denish and former Albuquerque Mayor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Ch%C3%A1vez\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Ch\u00e1vez<\/a> were considering running for the congressional seat. The two heavy-hitters would dramatically change the race.<\/p>\n<p>On the Democratic side, State Sen.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/griegoforcongress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Griego<\/a> of Albuquerque\u00a0is the only declared candidate, and he\u2019s been gathering support from the progressive wing of the party lately. Terry Brunner, U.S. Sen.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman\u2019s<\/a> former state director who now heads USDA Rural Development in New Mexico, says he\u2019s also considering running.<\/p>\n<p>On the Republican side, Albuquerque City Councilor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.danlewis2012.com\/\">Dan Lewis<\/a> is running, and\u00a0former gubernatorial candidate and state Rep.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.janice2012.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Janice Arnold-Jones<\/a> of Albuquerque has\u00a0formed an exploratory committee. Economic Development Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jon_Barela\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Barela<\/a>, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2010, is considering joining the race.<\/p>\n<p>Denish said there is \u201ca lot of assessing the district that has to go on,\u201d and said she expects \u201ca lot of activity in the next 60-90 days.\u201d She gave no timeframe for when she might decide whether to run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019m factoring in is what I want to do, and do I want to run?\u201d Denish said. \u201cCould I serve the district in a way that would be smart and meaningful? Is that the best spot for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty comfortable with how I could run,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Heinrich is vacating the U.S. House seat to run for the Senate seat Bingaman is vacating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Lt.
