{"id":3006,"date":"2008-03-18T15:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T21:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/03\/foley-announces-state-house-re-election-campaign\/"},"modified":"2008-03-18T15:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-18T21:07:00","slug":"foley-announces-state-house-re-election-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/03\/foley-announces-state-house-re-election-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Foley announces state House re-election campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R-AvdWamepI\/AAAAAAAAFRw\/O5KrzH7pfo8\/s1600-h\/Foley,+Dan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R-AvdWamepI\/AAAAAAAAFRw\/O5KrzH7pfo8\/s200\/Foley,+Dan.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5179191752755935890\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>House Minority Whip <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=190&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Foley<\/a>, R-Roswell, announced today that he\u2019s seeking re-election this year.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/DistrictMaps\/2002HouseDistricts\/House57.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">District 57<\/a> representative has served five terms in the Legislature, and wants a sixth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI want to continue the success we\u2019ve had in the first 10 years,\u201d Foley said in an interview. \u201cClearly, we\u2019ve built a foundation from which to make New <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>, specifically District 57, better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Foley cited among his successes his tough stances on crime and border security. He said in his first year in the Legislature he voted for Megan\u2019s Law, and this year his was one of the key votes that helped pass domestic violence legislation being pushed by the governor. He was a cosponsor several years ago of an unsuccessful attempt to repeal laws that allow driver\u2019s licenses and college scholarships for undocumented immigrants and other immigration-reform measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also cited the securing of capital outlay for his district as a success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot, from the baseball fields in Capitan, to the police building in Tularosa, to the parks and school repairs in Chaves county, roads,\u201d Foley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And Foley mentioned the enactment of a new practice in the House that capital outlay funds will be divided evenly among the members, regardless of party affiliation. Foley was instrumental in making that happen in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Foley pointed to the nation\u2019s economy and the looming redistricting battle as reasons for District 57 voters to send a senior legislator, instead of a freshman, to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa   Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn my opinion, for the last few years we\u2019ve been deficit spending,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a train wreck that\u2019s waiting to happen. \u2026 I think we have to work harder in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to make sure that the government lives within its means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Foley, 38, is a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> business owner and has been married 16 years. He and his wife have four children ages 6 to 15. He grew up in Cloudcroft. He\u2019s a former Marine who served in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Somalia<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He was arrested in June and charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and resisting arrest \u2013 all misdemeanors \u2013 stemming from a fight between two teens at a basketball tournament in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. He ran onto the court after his son was knocked over by the opposing coach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The charges against Foley were later dismissed, and a special prosecutor hired to consider the case decided not to refile them. Still, Foley said he expects the situation to be an issue this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m sure there will be mudslinging. I\u2019m sure that I will be attacked,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I think the people of District 57 know what I\u2019ve done for the district. And I won\u2019t apologize. I\u2019m the kind of guy who, when I see a child attacked, I don\u2019t think of my re-election first, I think of the child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI will continue to stand up for children, whether it\u2019s through legislation or personally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Foley also pledged that he won\u2019t resort to personal attacks during the campaign. He said he may point out policy differences between him and any opponents who file to run against him, but he won\u2019t resort to negative campaigning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cMy campaigns have always been about me, the future, the vision and issues, and always will be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Republican Dennis Kintigh, a retired FBI agent, filed today to run against Foley in the primary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Minority Whip Dan Foley, R-Roswell, announced today that he\u2019s seeking re-election this year.
