Susana Martinez<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Susana Martinez<\/a> issued a statement today calling the indictment of Third Judicial District Judge Mike Murphy \u201cdeeply troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe indictment of a sitting judge on charges that he paid bribes for his judicial appointment and solicited bribes from another judicial candidate is deeply troubling,\u201d Martinez said in a prepared statement. \u201cNo one is above the law, and this criminal defendant should not be given any special treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time Martinez has commented publicly about a case she initiated. Third Judicial District Judge Lisa Schultz brought the allegations against Murphy to Martinez in 2009, when Martinez was Do\u00f1a Ana County\u2019s district attorney. Martinez appointed Ninth Judicial District Attorney <a href=\"http:\/\/www.da.state.nm.us\/districts\/ninth\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Chandler<\/a> to investigate and prosecute the case because of her conflict. Murphy heard cases in the court where Martinez prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>The statement Martinez released today said nothing about her involvement in the case.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that, despite Martinez\u2019s statement, Murphy isn\u2019t charged with paying a bribe. He\u2019s charged with soliciting one from another judicial applicant.<\/p>\n<p>A grand jury <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/05\/murphy-charged-with-bribery-other-felonies\/\" target=\"_blank\">indicted Murphy Friday<\/a> on third-degree felony charges of demanding or receiving a bribe by a public employee; bribery of a public officer or employee; and bribery, intimidation, or retaliation against a witness, in addition to a fourth-degree felony charge of criminal solicitation.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors\u00a0allege that Murphy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/05\/report-details-allegations-against-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\">solicited a bribe<\/a> from potential judicial applicant Beverly Singleman, told Schultz to tell Singleman she needed to pay the bribe, and threatened to destroy Singleman\u2019s reputation for telling others that he solicited a bribe from her. No one else, including Richardson, has been charged or received notice that they may be indicted in the case, but Chandler\u2019s investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy\u2019s attorney says his client is innocent.<\/p>\n<p><em>A prior version of this article incorrectly stated that Murphy is charged with paying a bribe for his position.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
