{"id":2925,"date":"2008-02-28T16:04:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-28T22:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/wiviott-is-the-first-house-candidate-on-television\/"},"modified":"2008-02-28T16:04:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-28T22:04:00","slug":"wiviott-is-the-first-house-candidate-on-television","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/wiviott-is-the-first-house-candidate-on-television\/","title":{"rendered":"Wiviott is the first House candidate on television"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R8cwdnrNkgI\/AAAAAAAAFF0\/MGadZiYYgrA\/s1600-h\/Wiviott,+Don.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R8cwdnrNkgI\/AAAAAAAAFF0\/MGadZiYYgrA\/s200\/Wiviott,+Don.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172155982482870786\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a> became today the first U.S. House candidate from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> to air television commercials promoting his candidacy.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The first of two 30-second spots currently running in <st1:place st=\"on\">Northern New Mexico<\/st1:place> is a humorous attempt to get people to remember the Third Congressional District candidate\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHow do you say this man\u2019s name?\u201d the narrator asks as Wiviott\u2019s name appears on the screen. That\u2019s followed by two people struggling to pronounce it before Wiviott appears and pronounces it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ad goes on to show various people praising Wiviott, then reveals that he\u2019s a Democratic candidate for Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The second ad currently on the air is a more serious look at what the narrator calls \u201ca different kind of campaign\u2026 a campaign of ideas, a campaign that\u2019s going town to town, person to person.\u201d The narrator talks about education, health care and the <st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region> war and calls Wiviott \u201c<st1:place st=\"on\">Northern New Mexico<\/st1:place>\u2019s next hardworking congressman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The campaign declined to release the cost of the ads or say how long they\u2019ll run, but spokeswoman Caroline Buerkle said the campaign is \u201cexcited to take this next step\u2026 and to communicate with even more voters about how he will bring progressive leadership in the tradition of Tom Udall to <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The ads are smart. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> became the first Senate candidate to air television ads <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/pearce-becomes-first-to-air-television.html\">in January<\/a> because he needed to improve his name recognition outside the Second Congressional District. Wiviott, a political newcomer, needs to increase his name recognition as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also has an opportunity to craft a positive image of himself, and the ads effectively do that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R8cweHrNkhI\/AAAAAAAAFF8\/bz1888w2bVc\/s1600-h\/Adams,+Jon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R8cweHrNkhI\/AAAAAAAAFF8\/bz1888w2bVc\/s200\/Adams,+Jon.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172155991072805394\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The ads come as another Democratic Third Congressional District candidate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonadamsforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Adams<\/a>, has filed a lawsuit challenging Wiviott\u2019s petition signatures. Wiviott filed earlier this week a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. It states that <st1:place st=\"on\">Adams<\/st1:place>\u2019 challenge is baseless and also fails to meet the requirements for formal challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Adams<\/st1:place> responded to the motion to dismiss Wednesday afternoon with a news release claiming that Wiviott\u2019s lawyers have been calling him \u201calmost nonstop\u201d and threatening to subpoena or depose him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis is about the integrity of the process, and we should let the courts decide it, win or lose, without the tactics of harassment and intimidation,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\">Adams<\/st1:place> said in the release. \u201cFrankly, I am disappointed that Don Wiviott and his campaign would take this approach.
