{"id":2922,"date":"2008-02-27T17:10:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-27T23:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/guv-orders-state-police-to-block-access-to-bingo-parlor\/"},"modified":"2008-02-27T17:10:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-27T23:10:00","slug":"guv-orders-state-police-to-block-access-to-bingo-parlor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/guv-orders-state-police-to-block-access-to-bingo-parlor\/","title":{"rendered":"Guv orders state police to block access to bingo parlor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R8Xt_HrNkdI\/AAAAAAAAFFc\/pyrL8cybClw\/s1600-h\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R8Xt_HrNkdI\/AAAAAAAAFFc\/pyrL8cybClw\/s200\/Richardson,+Bill.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171801415752716754\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> has ordered the state police to block access to a planned \u201cillegal casino\u201d that an <st1:state st=\"on\">Oklahoma<\/st1:state> tribe is planning to open between <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> and Deming.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> took the action against the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortsillapache.com\/content\/view\/6\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Sill Apache\u2019s facility<\/a> at Akela Flats, according to a news release, after receiving no assurance from the federal government that it would act on the tribe\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The action comes after the state learned the facility could open for business as soon as Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe have emphatically stated our opposition to what clearly would be an illegal gaming operation in the State of <st1:state st=\"on\">New  Mexico<\/st1:state>,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cBecause the federal government is abdicating its responsibility, I have no choice but to take immediate and forceful action to protect the citizens of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and the integrity of our gaming laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The tribe plans to open a bingo parlor on land that was taken into federal trust in 2002 with the condition that it was not to be used for gaming. State police will block members of the public from entering the facility but not tribal members and employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> has worked with <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> Sens. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> to try, without success, to get the U.S. Department of the Interior to act to prevent opening of the casino. Bingaman, who wrote to the interior secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/news\/record.cfm?id=291448\" target=\"_blank\">in January<\/a> urging action, is supportive of the governor\u2019s order to the state police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe position of the state of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has been clear from the start: This land was not to be used for gaming,\u201d Bingaman said in a statement released by his office. \u201cWhen the land was taken into trust status, it was taken in with that limitation. I know of no reason why that should be overridden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said the National Indian Gaming Commission sent a letter to him on Feb. 8 seeking input on the planned bingo parlor. The governor\u2019s office responded on Feb. 15 that the state opposed the proposal, saying the tribe has failed to meet any of the exceptions that allow an off-reservation casino.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the federal government has taken no action since.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
