{"id":2915,"date":"2008-02-26T12:44:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-26T18:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/luna-county-gop-will-redo-its-convention\/"},"modified":"2008-02-26T12:44:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-26T18:44:00","slug":"luna-county-gop-will-redo-its-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/luna-county-gop-will-redo-its-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"Luna County GOP will redo its convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Republican Party of Luna County will have to redo its selection of delegates to the state preprimary nominating convention because some people were unfairly excluded last weekend from trying to become delegates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">State GOP spokesman Scott Darnell said the county party chairman decided to redo the process after the state party discovered that this year\u2019s convention chairman \u201cimproperly restricted who could run for and become a state convention delegate.\u201d That happened because the convention chairman assumed \u201cthat a standing rule from a previous convention carried over to this year\u2019s convention concerning who should be nominated and serve as a <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Luna<\/st1:PlaceName> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> delegate, and that is an incorrect assumption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Darnell said the problem was unintentional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Saturday\u2019s 9 a.m. meeting to redo the convention means the delegate hunt for the GOP\u2019s Second Congressional District candidates that has been <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/dunn-grabs-delegates-in-home-counties.html\">unusual<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/turnout-high-at-gop-county-convention.html\">drawn a lot of interest<\/a> isn\u2019t over. I\u2019m not sure what it means for the congressional candidates, because at least two of them had been claiming they won all five delegates from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Luna<\/st1:PlaceName>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:PlaceType><\/st1:place> at the county party\u2019s first convention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A Republican candidate for the Second Congressional District seat needs 28 delegates to appear on the ballot. If he doesn\u2019t reach that goal, he must gather a large number of signatures in a few days if he still wants to get on the ballot.
