{"id":2914,"date":"2008-02-26T08:49:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-26T14:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/state-gop-says-guv-should-not-call-special-session\/"},"modified":"2008-02-26T08:49:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-26T14:49:00","slug":"state-gop-says-guv-should-not-call-special-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/state-gop-says-guv-should-not-call-special-session\/","title":{"rendered":"State GOP says guv should not call special session"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gopnm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Party of New Mexico<\/a> says Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> should not call a special session for health-care reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe legislators and citizens of New Mexico spoke loudly and clearly during the past legislative session: Bill Richardson\u2019s government-managed health-care plan runs the risk of driving doctors and insurance providers out of New Mexico and could bankrupt the state,\u201d the party\u2019s executive director, Adam Feldman, said in a news release. \u201cFor the sake of <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> taxpayers and small businesses, <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> should not call a special session this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The governor has already said he will call a special session, and is meeting with Senate leaders on Thursday to discuss possible dates. The House approved a revised and watered-down version of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s universal health-care plan after much debate during the regular session that ended earlier this month, but the Senate refused to even consider it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many lawmakers have said publicly that they see no point to calling a special session when there is no consensus on health-care reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Feldman said the state should spend the rest of the year making \u201cevery effort to increase enrollment in the current health-care programs available to New Mexicans, allowing the Legislature to reassess our health-care situation next year.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Republican Party of New Mexico says Gov.
