It\u2019s the latest spat in what has become a contentious GOP U.S. Senate primary.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe must have a moral standard in this country. We cannot be a moral vacuum,\u201d Pearce said at the Valencia County GOP convention on Saturday. \u201cIf we try to do that I will guarantee that the same thing will happen to us that happened in England<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. They export more radical Islamic terrorists today than any country in the Middle East<\/st1:place>. It\u2019s because they said, \u2018We can live in a moral vacuum.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Wilson<\/st1:city> called on Pearce to justify his remarks or apologize to America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s closest ally in the war on terror.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cA U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> senator can\u2019t afford to offend our closest ally, particularly when he is wrong on the facts. Senators \u2013 and people who want to be senators \u2013 should not say irresponsible things like this,\u201d Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201c\u2026Great Britain<\/st1:country-region> and the United States<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> have had an unwavering, special relationship since World War II. We have a closer relationship with Britain<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> than with any other ally in the War on Terror. To claim that Britain<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> \u2018exports\u2019 more terrorists than the long list of countries that actively support and fund terrorism is incorrect and offensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Pearce campaign declined to justify the remarks or apologize for them.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cRep. Pearce has run a positive campaign focusing on his vision for building a more free, secure and prosperous New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>,\u201d spokesman Brian Phillips said. \u201c\u2026Mrs. Wilson\u2019s campaign has unfortunately chosen a very different and negative path that does not serve well the people of New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>. Instead of calling for apologies, New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> would be better served if she joined us in calling for lower taxes, pro-life policies and eliminating wasteful spending and out-of-control earmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pearce hasn\u2019t stayed entirely above the fray. At the Do\u00f1a Ana County GOP convention on Saturday, he called himself the only candidate with a 100-percent rating on votes related to combating abortion and keeping taxes low. He then pointed out that, though his opponent is a woman, he was endorsed last week by a pro-life group that actively seeks to endorse pro-life women in political races across the nation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
