{"id":2901,"date":"2008-02-20T18:09:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-21T00:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/miller-to-try-independent-bid-for-udalls-seat\/"},"modified":"2008-02-20T18:09:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-21T00:09:00","slug":"miller-to-try-independent-bid-for-udalls-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/miller-to-try-independent-bid-for-udalls-seat\/","title":{"rendered":"Miller to try independent bid for Udall&#8217;s seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Carol Miller made the Third Congressional District race much more interesting on Tuesday by announcing that she\u2019s going to run as an independent for the seat, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/SantaFeNorthernNM\/Congressional-race-Miller-makes-second-run-for-House-seat\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Fe New Mexican<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The only time the Democratic district was in Republican hands in recent years was after Miller ran as a Green Party candidate in 1997 and split the liberal vote with Democrat Eric Serna. Republican Bill Redmond won the special election to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>, only to be replaced next year in the regular election by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Miller won 17 percent of the vote in 1997. The next year, she received only 4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Miller needs 6,000 signatures by June 4, and told the newspaper she\u2019s running because she has the experience that will be needed with all three of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:State><\/st1:place>\u2019s House members leaving to run for Senate. She has worked with Congress for 10 years as director of a national think tank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think I\u2019d do the best job,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Democrats in the race are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonadamsforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Adams<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benrlujan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ben R. Luj\u00e1n<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/rudymartinforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rudy Martin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montoyaforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Montoya<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bennyshendojr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Benny Shendo Jr.<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a>.
