{"id":28899,"date":"2011-04-30T10:44:12","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T16:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=28899"},"modified":"2011-04-30T10:44:15","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T16:44:15","slug":"griego-enters-congressional-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/04\/griego-enters-congressional-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Griego enters congressional race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_28604\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 120px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28604\" title=\"Griego, Eric\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Griego-Eric.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eric Griego<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/lcs\/legdetails.aspx?SPONCODE=SGRIR\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Griego<\/a> will give up his state Senate seat to run for New Mexico\u2019s 1st Congressional District seat in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Griego unveiled his <a href=\"http:\/\/griegoforcongress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">congressional campaign website<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bU_xn5ZWUZg\" target=\"_blank\">an announcement video<\/a> earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conservative Republicans running the U.S. Congress have declared war on working families,\u201d Griego said in a news release.\u00a0\u201cThey want to privatize and ration Medicare for seniors, gut Medicaid for the most vulnerable children and families, and change the promise of retirement with dignity for Americans who have worked their whole lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griego\u2019s state Senate seat is up for grabs next year, so he\u2019s giving it up to instead attempt to replace Democrat <a href=\"http:\/\/heinrich.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a> in Congress. Griego has served in the Senate for three years and has pushed for campaign and ethics reform during that time, and advocated for the consideration of revenue raisers in addition to budget cuts to help balance the state\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a congressman who will unapologetically stand up for working families and take on those who would put the interests of the very richest Americans and large corporations ahead of our children, our seniors and our environment,\u201d Griego said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Griego is a former Albuquerque city councilor and assistant secretary for economic development. He\u2019s currently the executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmvoices.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico Voices for Children<\/a>, a non-profit research, policy and advocacy organization that fights for the state\u2019s vulnerable children and working families.<\/p>\n<p>Griego\u2019s entrance into the race isn\u2019t a surprise.
