Mechanized vehicles aren\u2019t allowed in wilderness areas, which is at the heart of the battle surrounding <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/D?d112:1:.\/temp\/~bdsD0i::%7C\/home\/LegislativeData.php\" target=\"_blank\">H.R. 1581<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From the Sun-News:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo land in the in the Robledo or Sierra de Las Uvas mountains, in the west and northwest Do\u00f1a Ana County, was recommended suitable for wilderness in 1993. They\u2019re among the temporary wilderness designations that would go by the wayside, if Pearce\u2019s bill were passed. About 8,600 acres in the West Potrillos, located in the southwestern part of the county, also would be removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth are areas popular among off-road vehicle enthusiasts. But environmentalists contend they\u2019re scenically and ecologically valuable areas that merit wilderness protection.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s been a long battle over wilderness in Do\u00f1a Ana County. New Mexico\u2019s U.S. senators, both Democrats, have in the past proposed setting aside hundreds of thousands of acres <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/06\/senators-unveil-revised-wilderness-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\">as permanent wilderness<\/a>. Pearce, on the other hand, has proposed new conservation designations that would be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/06\/pearce-wants-no-wilderness-areas-in-dona-ana-county\/\" target=\"_blank\">less restrictive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce has said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/02\/pearce-says-he-wants-to-protect-dona-ana-county-land\/\" target=\"_blank\">he wants to preserve land<\/a> in Do\u00f1a Ana County. The senators <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/03\/no-decision-on-wilderness-bill-for-dona-ana-county\/\" target=\"_blank\">haven\u2019t announced<\/a> whether they will try again for a wilderness bill during the current Congress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Rep.
