{"id":2828,"date":"2008-02-05T16:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-05T22:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/voter-turnout-high-in-las-cruces-around-the-state\/"},"modified":"2008-02-05T16:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-05T22:07:00","slug":"voter-turnout-high-in-las-cruces-around-the-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/02\/voter-turnout-high-in-las-cruces-around-the-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Voter turnout high in Las Cruces, around the state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6jgQV9XMDI\/AAAAAAAAE1k\/Fmf-PhYh6Cg\/s1600-h\/Voting1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6jgQV9XMDI\/AAAAAAAAE1k\/Fmf-PhYh6Cg\/s1600\/Voting1.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163623544157319218\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Voter turnout in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las   Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and most areas around the state is very high for today\u2019s Democratic presidential caucus, forcing the state party to dip into its emergency reserve of ballots because some polling locations have run out.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Just after noon, when the polls opened, more than 60 people stood in line to vote at <st1:placename st=\"on\">Mesilla<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Park<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Recreation<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Center<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. A couple of miles away at Valley View Elementary \u2013 a location that usually doesn\u2019t have long lines \u2013 more than 100 people waited in line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Shortly after the lunch hour, lines shortened at some places. At <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">City Hall<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, about 30 people were in line to vote just after 1 p.m. A few minutes later, about 40 people were in line at <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Camino<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Real<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Middle School<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. Other polling places reported very long lines even after the lunch hour, including Golden Mesa Retirement Home on the <st1:place st=\"on\">East Mesa<\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Though turnout is lower in parts of Northern New Mexico because of snow, it\u2019s very high in most areas around the state, officials with the state party and the campaigns of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s real heavy everywhere,\u201d said Obama spokesman Trevor Fitzgibbon. \u201cThe word is that the turnout is off the charts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Because of the high turnout, Obama\u2019s staffers in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> redirected volunteers to the Democratic Party to work at polling places instead of campaigning. As a result, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has a more visible presence near polling places around the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Laura Sanchez, executive director of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, said the party had originally distributed 150,000 ballots to the polling places, but had thousands more in an emergency reserve in case they were needed. More than 2,000 of those emergency ballots have been distributed to polling sites that have run out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sanchez said the party initially expected to report results on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Web site<\/a> fairly soon after polls close at 7 p.m., but the heavy turnout could delay results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Some others are taking advantage of today\u2019s election to gather signatures for their own races. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a> has volunteers at most polling places around <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> gathering signatures. At one polling place, I also ran in to volunteers for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryteagueforcongress08.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Polls are open until 7 p.m. Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmdemocrats.org\/ht\/d\/sp\/i\/1122561\/pid\/1122561\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to find your polling place.
