{"id":28137,"date":"2011-04-05T16:35:05","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T22:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=28137"},"modified":"2011-10-08T21:49:54","modified_gmt":"2011-10-09T03:49:54","slug":"murphy-has-%e2%80%98committed-no-crime%e2%80%99-lawyer-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/04\/murphy-has-%e2%80%98committed-no-crime%e2%80%99-lawyer-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Murphy has \u2018committed no crime,\u2019 lawyer says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_27974\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27974 \" title=\"Murphy, Mike 4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Murphy-Mike-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">District Judge Mike Murphy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The attorney representing Third Judicial District Judge Mike Murphy\u00a0says any suggestion that the judge committed a crime is \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudge Murphy has not committed any crime, and any suggestion otherwise is absurd,\u201d Las Cruces attorney Michael Stout was quoted today by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/las_cruces-news\/ci_17772796\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudge Murphy is a dedicated and honest judge and was a tremendously experienced and talented lawyer,\u201d Stout said. \u201cHis selection as a judge several years ago was an easy pick and followed the same nominating process that produced all judges in the state and in Las Cruces, including the most recent appointees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an insult to all judges in New Mexico and Las Cruces to suggest that any judgeship could be purchased. Judge Murphy\u2019s position was not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019ve reported, Murphy has received notification that a grand jury will consider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/03\/judge-may-be-indicted-on-bribery-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\">charging him with bribery<\/a>. The allegations under investigation are that Murphy, a Democrat, paid a bribe in exchange for then-Gov.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Richardson\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> appointing him to the bench in 2006, and that he may have solicited bribes for Richardson from applicants for other judgeships.<\/p>\n<p>The bribe or bribes were allegedly paid as political contributions and went to an unnamed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/0206114366newsstate04-02-11.htm\" target=\"_blank\">\u201clocal political figure.\u201d<\/a> No one besides Murphy, including Richardson, has received notification that they may be indicted.<\/p>\n<p>A grand jury has been scheduled to meet twice \u2013 most recently for today \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/04\/grand-jury-delayed-in-murphy-case\/\" target=\"_blank\">and then delayed<\/a>.
