Bill McCamley, Javier Mart\u00ednez and Angelica Rubio wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As our communities grow and succeed, the benefits extend across the border uplifting both our peoples,&#8221; the letter states.<\/p>\n<p>Pe\u00f1a Nieto hasn&#8217;t yet responded to the Jan. 27 invitation. The session ends March 18.<\/p>\n<p>McCamley and Rubio are from Las Cruces near the Mexican border. Mart\u00ednez, who is from Albuquerque,\u00a0spent part of his childhood in Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez and is the son of immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes in the midst of uncertain times for U.S.\/Mexico relations and as protests\u00a0are <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2017\/01\/will-citizen-movements-shape-the-u-s-mexico-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\">sweeping both nations<\/a>. New U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive orders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/25\/politics\/donald-trump-immigration-executive-orders\/\" target=\"_blank\">on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0to advance construction of a wall along the United States&#8217; southern border and limit immigration from certain nations. He signed another immigration-limiting order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/28\/us\/politics\/annotating-trump-immigration-refugee-order.html\" target=\"_blank\">on Friday<\/a>\u00a0that does not affect Mexicans.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has not signed an order to repeal former President Barack Obama&#8217;s order granting temporary legal status to some immigrants who were brought to the United States without legal status as children &#8212; but he&#8217;s said to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/1\/25\/14390106\/leaked-drafts-trump-immigrants-executive-order\" target=\"_blank\">considering such action<\/a>. He also says he plans to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/22\/politics\/trump-renegotiate-nafta\/\" target=\"_blank\">renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pe\u00f1a Nieto reiterated on Wednesday that Mexico won&#8217;t pay for a\u00a0wall. Trump responded in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/824615820391305216\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/824616644370714627\" target=\"_blank\">tweets<\/a> early Thursday:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico. It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers\u00a0of jobs and companies lost,\u201d Trump tweeted. \u201cIf Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s president\u00a0then\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2017\/01\/border-wall-executive-order-sets-off-political-firestorm-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\">canceled the meeting<\/a>. He announced the decision publicly in his own <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EPN\/status\/824660333964824576\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EPN\/status\/824660540173668353\" target=\"_blank\">tweets<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning we have informed the White House that I will not attend the meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with the\u00a0<span class=\"twitter-atreply pretty-link js-nav\" data-mentioned-user-id=\"822215679726100480\">@POTUS,\u201d Pe\u00f1a Nieto\u00a0tweeted. \u201cMexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to achieve agreements in favor of both Nations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Later Thursday, the Trump administration suggested a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico to pay for the wall &#8212; which would have a significant impact <a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2017\/01\/texas-not-enthused-about-possible-import-tax-to-pay-for-border-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\">on the economies of border states<\/a>, including New Mexico. The White House later backed off the suggestion a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and Pe\u00f1a Nieto talked by phone for an hour <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/01\/trump-mexican-president-enrique-pena-nieto-speak-234274\" target=\"_blank\">on Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net\/nmhousedems\/pages\/372\/attachments\/original\/1485716813\/McCamleyRubioMartinezLetter_FINAL_01272017.pdf?1485716813\" target=\"_blank\">their letter<\/a>, the New Mexico lawmakers didn&#8217;t mention Trump.
