{"id":2796,"date":"2008-01-30T09:38:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-30T15:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/01\/obama-wiviott-heinrich-win-straw-poll\/"},"modified":"2008-01-30T09:38:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-30T15:38:00","slug":"obama-wiviott-heinrich-win-straw-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2008\/01\/obama-wiviott-heinrich-win-straw-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama, Wiviott, Heinrich win straw poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6CaKV9XK2I\/AAAAAAAAEr8\/2fFd-7wDS8o\/s1600-h\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6CaKV9XK2I\/AAAAAAAAEr8\/2fFd-7wDS8o\/s200\/Obama,+Barack.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161294675450473314\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Straw-poll victories are signs of organizational strength, so the campaigns of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich<\/a> have to be pleased with their success in a straw poll taken Tuesday evening in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sandoval<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the presidential race, Obama topped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> with 50 votes to her 41 after Javier Gonzales, chairman of the New Mexico Highlands Board of Regents, spoke for Obama. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a>, who is dropping out of the race today (click <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20080130\/ap_on_el_pr\/edwards;_ylt=AgBwyFEVY53ddsrgMzONISCs0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to read about that), received 28 votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the Third Congressional District race, Wiviott received 50 votes. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benrlujan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ben R. Luj\u00e1n<\/a> came in second with 33 votes. And in the First Congressional District race, Heinrich received 30 votes to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellelujangrishamforcongress.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Lujan-Grisham\u2019s<\/a> five votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6CaU19XK5I\/AAAAAAAAEsU\/3HxEJ4tpuDQ\/s1600-h\/Wiviott,+Don.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6CaU19XK5I\/AAAAAAAAEsU\/3HxEJ4tpuDQ\/s200\/Wiviott,+Don.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161294855839099794\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The event, held in Rio Rancho, was sponsored by the New Mexico Democratic Club and the Democratic Women of Sandoval County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The winners are the candidates generally favored by progressive Democrats. I\u2019ve written often in recent weeks about the organizational strength of progressives in Las Cruces \u2013 who recently took control of the city council \u2013 so, in my view, this is more an indication of the organizational strength of the progressive movement in New Mexico than it is an indication of the strength of individual campaigns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But those progressives are helping the campaigns of those who won the straw poll. That\u2019s enough to concern any Democratic candidate not favored by progressives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6CaOl9XK3I\/AAAAAAAAEsE\/gYrIGw1gcps\/s1600-h\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R6CaOl9XK3I\/AAAAAAAAEsE\/gYrIGw1gcps\/s200\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161294748464917362\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Straw polls also indicate reaction to the candidates. Those in attendance apparently related more to the speech given by Wiviott than that given by Luj\u00e1n, for example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Wiviott touted his success in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI am encouraged by the support I received in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sandoval<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, one of the largest counties in the district,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is clear that Democrats are ready for a change from the \u2018business-as-usual\u2019 politics of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The victory by Heinrich wasn\u2019t a surprise, but most Democrats consider <st1:city st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:city> to be the frontrunner in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s presidential contest and Luj\u00e1n the frontrunner in the Third Congressional District race.
