You can read the full text of his speech <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2008\/01\/20080128-13.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C_V9XKtI\/AAAAAAAAEq0\/msZKh0ovqFA\/s1600-h\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C_V9XKtI\/AAAAAAAAEq0\/msZKh0ovqFA\/s200\/Domenici,+Pete.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160917353983584978\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a>, in a news release, said Bush outlined good policy initiatives and urged Congress to act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cPresident Bush sent a very clear message that he intends to work up to the very end of his term pushing what he believes will make us a stronger nation,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cDespite this being his last year in office, the president is right to challenge Congress and the American people to work together to improve our economy, to protect the nation and tackle hard issues like the solvency of programs such as Social Security and Medicare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C5V9XKpI\/AAAAAAAAEqU\/G0nM690v22g\/s1600-h\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C5V9XKpI\/AAAAAAAAEqU\/G0nM690v22g\/s200\/Bingaman,+Jeff.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160917250904369810\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> said he was glad to hear some talk of bipartisanship from the president, and said he believes bipartisan work will lead to an economic stimulus package in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI hope we can also pass legislation to make improvements to the No Child Left Behind Act, find a way to continue dealing with our energy challenges and make adequate investments in the scientific research that will keep us competitive in the global marketplace,\u201d Bingaman said. \u201cUnfortunately, it is clear that this White House will not bring about a resolution to two other key issues facing our country: getting us out of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and health-care reform. Those are two areas that regrettably will be left to the next president to address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Domenici welcomed Bush\u2019s calls to increase funding for veterans\u2019 care, science education programs and energy policy initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019m pleased that the president has continued his commitment to expanding clean energy,\u201d Domenici said. \u201cI\u2019m particularly thankful for the administration\u2019s strong support for nuclear power, which I believe will be an important part of the president\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">U.S. House members react<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C5l9XKqI\/AAAAAAAAEqc\/_J4AytMT5I8\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C5l9XKqI\/AAAAAAAAEqc\/_J4AytMT5I8\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160917255199337122\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomudall.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> said he was also hopeful that bipartisanship would lead to solutions for many of the nation\u2019s pressing challenges. But he called much of Bush\u2019s speech \u201creminiscent of misdirected solutions offered by the president in the past,\u201d including the same energy proposal Domenici lauded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIf we are truly serious about strengthening our energy security, and in turn our national security, now is the time to act boldly,\u201d Udall said. \u201cIn addition to our energy security, the president and the Congress must move immediately and collectively to address the looming economic recession to provide real relief to <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s working families. We also must increase access to health care, improve education and bring to a close our nation\u2019s long and tragic war in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI urge the president to work with the Congress to address these and other problems in the year ahead,\u201d Udall said. \u201cTogether we can find common ground to make meaningful progress for the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C519XKrI\/AAAAAAAAEqk\/RT6jVZQ0N3I\/s1600-h\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C519XKrI\/AAAAAAAAEqk\/RT6jVZQ0N3I\/s200\/Wilson,+Heather.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160917259494304434\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/wilson.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> said the president addressed two important points in his speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cOne was the need to pass an economic stimulus bill through the House and the Senate very quickly and get it to the president,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cI want it to be really focused on small business and encouraging economic growth for the long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She also noted the president\u2019s words about the nation\u2019s intelligence laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe passed the Protect America Act in August, which really allowed us to listen to foreigners in foreign countries while protecting Americans\u2019 civil liberties,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Wilson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cBut there\u2019s a sunset in that bill and it expires on Feb. 1. Unless Congress acts, we will lose our access to important intelligence that\u2019s preventing another terrorist act. I think it\u2019s absolutely vital that we get that fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> did not release a statement following the president\u2019s speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Wiviott criticizes president<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C_F9XKsI\/AAAAAAAAEqs\/LrgxvukwCXA\/s1600-h\/Wiviott,+Don.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R59C_F9XKsI\/AAAAAAAAEqs\/LrgxvukwCXA\/s200\/Wiviott,+Don.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160917349688617666\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Other than Udall and Wilson, who are running for Domenici\u2019s seat, the only candidate for federal office to release a statement following Bush\u2019s speech was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a>, one of several Democrats seeking to replace Udall in the House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cPresident Bush\u2019s final State of the Union address was a sad reminder of how little progress <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has made since 2001,\u201d Wiviott said. \u201cWe have heard the same litany of promises for seven years in a row, but the challenges we face have only grown worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to turn the page on empty promises and partisan gridlock. We need leaders who will work together to deliver results,\u201d Wiviott said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Update, 2:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a news release, Pearce said several of Bush\u2019s proposals \u201cshould be agreeable and achievable for Congress this year,\u201d including an economic stimulus package.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cLike the president, I support a combination of rebates for families and tax relief for small business. We need to get money into the hands of those who need it most and will spur our economy,\u201d Pearce said. \u201cFurther, I strongly oppose any tax increases to pay for government programs that have little chance of stimulating the economy and no hope of helping middle-class families immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Pearce, while saying he doesn\u2019t believe \u201call earmarks are wrong,\u201d said he supports \u201can open, honest and transparent system that identifies who requested the funding and ensures each earmark gets a vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAt the start of this session, there are indications that Congress is willing to act in a bipartisan way to make sure our economy does not suffer,\u201d Pearce said. \u201cIf we continue to work together, I believe we have an unprecedented opportunity this year to make progress on a number of issues including education, health care and border security.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Mexico\u2019s members of Congress had mixed reactions to President Bush\u2019s last State of the Union address on Monday, but all urged action and expressed hope that important issues can be addressed during the coming year.
