{"id":27904,"date":"2011-03-30T22:32:41","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T04:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=27904"},"modified":"2011-03-31T13:21:18","modified_gmt":"2011-03-31T19:21:18","slug":"no-decision-on-wilderness-bill-for-dona-ana-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/03\/no-decision-on-wilderness-bill-for-dona-ana-county\/","title":{"rendered":"No decision on wilderness bill for Do\u00f1a Ana County"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_13038\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13038 \" title=\"Organ Mountains\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Organ-Mountains.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Organ Mountains (Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New Mexico\u2019s U.S. senators are continuing to push for new conservation and wilderness areas in Northern New Mexico, but they have not decided whether to try again this year for permanent protection of land in Do\u00f1a Ana County including the Organ Mountains.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kob.com\/article\/stories\/s2042105.shtml?cat=504\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cU.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> on Tuesday reintroduced legislation that would preserve about 236,000 acres of public land (in Taos and Rio Arriba counties) managed by the Bureau of Land Management by designating a combination of conservation and wilderness areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch of the land &#8211; 214,600 acres &#8211; would be managed as a conservation area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo other parcels would be managed as wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFellow New Mexico Democratic Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomudall.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a> is cosponsoring the Rio Grande del Norte National Conservation Area Establishment Act.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Asked if there are plans to try again this year for permanent wilderness designations for land in Do\u00f1a Ana County, Bingaman spokeswoman Jude McCartin said that\u2019s currently \u201cunclear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senators proposed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d111:s.01689:\" target=\"_blank\">a bill<\/a> last year that would have designated hundreds of thousands of acres in Do\u00f1a Ana County as wilderness \u2013 the federal government\u2019s most restrictive conservation designation.<\/p>\n<p>The bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2010\/12\/time-runs-out-on-wilderness-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">died in the Senate<\/a>, and now the area is represented in the House by Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, who has a long history of criticizing Do\u00f1a Ana County wilderness proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce has said he wants <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/02\/pearce-says-he-wants-to-protect-dona-ana-county-land\/\" target=\"_blank\">to work with Bingaman and Udall<\/a> to \u201cpreserve the beautiful lands and open spaces\u201d in Do\u00f1a Ana County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Mexico\u2019s U.S. senators are continuing to push for new conservation and wilderness areas in Northern New Mexico, but they have not decided whether to try again this year for permanent protection of land in Do\u00f1a Ana County including the Organ Mountains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[115,147,116],"class_list":["post-27904","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-and-analysis","tag-dona-ana-county","tag-environment","tag-washington"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27904","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=27904"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27904\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=27904"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=27904"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=27904"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
