(Photo by Heath Haussamen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Republican U.S. Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/sowardsforsenate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Sowards<\/a> visited Washington, D.C. earlier this week in an attempt to establish himself as the true conservative in the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be no one to my right, and I believe the other candidates are more conglomerated around the moderate area,\u201d Sowards said in an interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/davidcatanese\/0311\/There_will_be_no_one_to_my_right.html\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t see how anyone would get between me and conservative principles.\u00a0They can go to the loon right, which is, as far as I\u2019m concerned, like coming back around on the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Politico:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSowards is in\u00a0D.C. this week\u00a0to meet with an array of\u00a0conservative touchstone groups like the Club for Growth, the National Rifle Association, FreedomWorks,\u00a0Sen. Jim DeMint\u2019s\u00a0Senate Conservatives Fund, the Tea Party Express and the National Republican Trust.\u00a0Representatives with The Prosper Group, which\u00a0handled fundraising for several high-profile tea party candidates like Sharron Angle and Rep. Allen West, flew into meet with Sowards recently, according to an adviser.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sowards has run for federal office twice in the past, without success; however, with the growth of the tea party movement, he appears to be getting a closer look from some influential groups this time around. He also recently got a prominent mention in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/03\/sowards-gets-prominent-mention-as-tea-party-candidate\/\" target=\"_blank\">an investors.com article<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One of Sowards\u2019 missions is to keep U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., out of the race. While Pearce hasn\u2019t announced his plans, Sowards was quoted by Politico as saying Pearce supporters have told him they don\u2019t want Pearce giving up his House seat to run for Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ltgov.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Sanchez<\/a> is also in Washington this week as he considers entering the Republican Senate primary. If he does enter the race, he will try to portray himself as being to the right of the highest-profile declared Republican candidate \u2013 former U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/heatherwilson.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a> \u2013 which would put Sanchez directly at odds with Sowards.<\/p>\n<p>One other less-known Republican has entered the race to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/bingaman.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Bingaman<\/a> in the U.S. Senate \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billenglish4senate.org\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">William S. English<\/a> of Alamogordo.
