\"\"<\/a>Barack Obama<\/a> will become the first presidential candidate on Saturday to air television ads in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, and his campaign appears to be the most active on the ground with 18 days until the state\u2019s Democrats caucus on Feb. 5.<\/o:p><\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s 30-second ad focuses on health-care reform at a time that the state\u2019s Legislature is also debating the issue, and provides a Web address – barackobama.com\/healthcare<\/a> – where people can learn about his plan. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother died of cancer at 53. In those last, painful months, she was more worried about paying her medical bills than getting well,\u201d Obama says in the ad. \u201cI hear stories like hers every day.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor 20 years, Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> has talked about health-care reform and reformed nothing,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve got a plan to cut costs and cover everyone, but unless we stop the bickering and the lobbyists, we\u2019ll be in the same place 20 years from now.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Obama National Campaign Manager David Plouffe, speaking today in a conference call with New Mexico reporters, wouldn\u2019t say how long the ad will run or reveal the size of the media buy, but he said it will run in the Albuquerque media market and on cable television statewide, including in Do\u00f1a Ana County, the only corner of the state not included in the Albuquerque market.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The ad buy may also be expanded to include the El Paso<\/st1:city> market, which reaches Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> Ana<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placename>, and the Amarillo<\/st1:city> market, which reaches Curry<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, he said.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Hillary Clinton\u2019s<\/a> campaign has not responded to an inquiry about whether it plans to run television ads in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018A deep presence\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Obama campaign opened its first office in New Mexico<\/st1:state> on Jan. 9 \u2013 the day before Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> dropped out of the presidential race \u2013 and has since opened a second office in Las Cruces<\/st1:city> and sent a number of staffers to New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. Plouffe said a third office will open in Santa Fe<\/st1:city> next week, and he said the campaign has already recruited several hundred volunteers in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

One of them, a University<\/st1:placetype> of New Mexico<\/st1:placename> student who campaigned for Obama in Iowa<\/st1:state>, showed up at a Democratic Party meeting in Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> on Thursday to give a speech about Obama\u2019s candidacy.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe example you cited from last night is something that\u2019s happening across the state,\u201d Plouffe said when I told him about the UNM student. \u201c\u2026\u201cWhen Gov. Richardson withdrew from the race, we really that day began organizing and we opened up offices. We\u2019re fortunate to have a lot of intense support. \u2026 So we are really able to have a deep presence in a state like New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The Clinton<\/st1:city> campaign has, to this point, taken a different approach in New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. She doesn\u2019t have as strong a ground organization in the state, though her campaign says it will open an office in Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in the coming days. Clinton<\/st1:city> has, however, secured some big-name New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> endorsements.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And the Clinton<\/st1:city> campaign has promised that the senator will visit New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> before Feb. 5. Plouffe did not make the same promise about Obama, saying the schedule hasn\u2019t been set beyond the South Carolina<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> primary on Jan. 26. More than 20 states will vote in presidential primaries and caucuses on Feb. 5, and he said Obama will visit as many as possible before that date.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Plouffe said the Obama campaign has slowly been building strong organizations in Feb. 5 states, and promised a \u201cheavy presence\u201d on New Mexico television through that date.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to compete vigorously in New Mexico<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> on Feb. 5,\u201d he said.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The candidates are currently focused on Nevada<\/st1:state>\u2019s Saturday caucus and will turn to South Carolina<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> next week before shifting to the Feb. 5 states.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
