\"\"<\/a>Greg Sowards<\/a> of Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has formally announced his campaign to replace Steve Pearce<\/a> in Congress. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cAs your representative, I will not cave under pressure. I love people but will not sell my soul for popularity in Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>,\u201d Sowards said. \u201cThe decisions that I make will be based on my conservative, God-fearing principles and on the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Though I\u2019ve written about Sowards\u2019 candidacy several times already, he had not previously made a formal announcement of his candidacy.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Sowards, a Republican, lives in Las Cruces<\/st1:city> and owns Kid\u2019s Kountry<\/st1:placename> Child<\/st1:placename> Care<\/st1:placename> Centers<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> and a small manufacturing business.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Sowards, 58, is a graduate of Los Lunas High School, New Mexico Military Institute and Brigham<\/st1:placename> Young<\/st1:placename> University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>. He is an Army veteran who served in Korea<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Sowards and his wife Karen have six children and nine grandchildren.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He ran as a Republican in 1996 against then-U.S. Rep. Joe Skeen<\/a> in part because of the growing national debt, which at the time was $5 trillion. Today is has grown to $9 trillion.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI ran in 1996 because I knew we needed to change the direction our country was going,\u201d Sowards said. \u201cThat change is only more critical today.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Sowards said he will ask himself five questions before voting on legislation:<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u2022 Is it worth putting our children and grandchildren into debt?<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u2022 What effect does it have on America<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place>\u2019s traditional family?<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u2022 Does it take rights away from law-abiding citizens and give them to criminals?<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u2022 Will it uphold the Constitution?<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u2022 Will it protect the sovereignty of America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>?<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Sowards said he supports a strong military, border protection, gun rights, land rights, a fair tax and a smaller federal government. He is pro-life. And he had this to say about congressional earmarks: <\/p>\n
