There are four announced Democratic candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Newman, a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> realtor, is a past vice president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realtor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Realtors<\/a>, which will help him raise money. He is also a past <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> city commissioner and a current and past member of a number of community boards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Newman has lived in <st1:city st=\"on\">Hobbs<\/st1:city> since 1978 and, before that, lived in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clovis<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, the news service reported. He and his wife have two grown sons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He told the news service he would leave troops in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> if elected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe cannot leave <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> until we are reasonably certain that it is stable and reasonably secure,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a viewpoint that may be different because my son served there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Newman also told the Associated Press that he wants more tax dollars spent on infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Newman\u2019s entrance into the race means at least three Republicans \u2013 Newman, rancher and retired banker <a href=\"http:\/\/aubreydunn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aubrey L. Dunn Jr.<\/a> and restaurant-chain owner and rancher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtinsleyforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tinsley<\/a> \u2013 will have a lot of money and be credible candidates. <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> GOP chair <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlgreer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">C. Earl Greer<\/a> is also well-known and could run a credible campaign. <st1:placename st=\"on\">Former<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype> GOP executive director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imbackingbob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Cornelius<\/a> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> daycare center owner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shortbaldhonest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Sowards<\/a> have also been working hard and could earn some support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And there are still a couple of potential GOP candidates considering the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There\u2019s no obvious frontrunner, and it\u2019s possible that no GOP candidate will receive the votes of 20 percent of delegates at the March preprimary nominating convention \u2013 the only way to appear on the ballot after a change the Legislature and governor approved last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lawmakers will be asked to provide an alternative path to the ballot during the session that starts Tuesday.
