\"\"<\/a>Hobbs Mayor Monty Newman has confirmed that he\u2019s running for the Second Congressional District seat being vacated by Steve Pearce<\/a>. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is important that we engage in our democracy,\u201d the Associated Press<\/a> quoted Newman as saying. \u201cI don\u2019t want to look back on life and say I didn\u2019t do the best I could in participating in this society in which I live.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Republican joins five others as announced GOP candidates. There are four announced Democratic candidates.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Newman, a Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> realtor, is a past vice president of the National Association of Realtors<\/a>, which will help him raise money. He is also a past Hobbs<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> city commissioner and a current and past member of a number of community boards.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Newman has lived in Hobbs<\/st1:city> since 1978 and, before that, lived in Clovis<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, the news service reported. He and his wife have two grown sons.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

He told the news service he would leave troops in Iraq<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> if elected.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot leave Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> until we are reasonably certain that it is stable and reasonably secure,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a viewpoint that may be different because my son served there.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Newman also told the Associated Press that he wants more tax dollars spent on infrastructure.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Newman\u2019s entrance into the race means at least three Republicans \u2013 Newman, rancher and retired banker Aubrey L. Dunn Jr.<\/a> and restaurant-chain owner and rancher Ed Tinsley<\/a> \u2013 will have a lot of money and be credible candidates. Sierra<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> GOP chair C. Earl Greer<\/a> is also well-known and could run a credible campaign. Former<\/st1:placename> Bernalillo<\/st1:placename> County<\/st1:placetype> GOP executive director Bob Cornelius<\/a> and Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> daycare center owner Greg Sowards<\/a> have also been working hard and could earn some support.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And there are still a couple of potential GOP candidates considering the race.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no obvious frontrunner, and it\u2019s possible that no GOP candidate will receive the votes of 20 percent of delegates at the March preprimary nominating convention \u2013 the only way to appear on the ballot after a change the Legislature and governor approved last year.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Lawmakers will be asked to provide an alternative path to the ballot during the session that starts Tuesday. If they don\u2019t approve a change, in a preprimary race where no candidate receives 20 percent, the party won\u2019t be able to place a candidate on the ballot.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

The Democrats in the race are retired Presbyterian pastor Al Kissling<\/a>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley<\/a>, Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> businessman and retired teacher Frank McKinnon<\/a> and former Lea County Commissioner Harry Teague<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
