He\u2019s a conservative Democrat who expresses open dislike for Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a>, and his replacing Altamirano gives the Senate an even greater ability to challenge the governor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=286\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Sanchez<\/a> of Belen, the majority leader, retains most control under the Senate system, unlike in the House, where the speaker, not the majority leader, calls the shots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Jennings<\/st1:city>\u2019 selection as president means every Democratic and Republican leader in that body, with the exception of Majority Whip <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=261\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Jane Garcia<\/a> of Do\u00f1a Ana, is someone not generally considered a <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> ally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Jennings<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has been in the Senate since 1979.
