{"id":26847,"date":"2011-03-04T14:10:51","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T21:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=26847"},"modified":"2011-03-04T14:10:51","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T21:10:51","slug":"what-happens-when-a-private-company-controls-public-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/03\/what-happens-when-a-private-company-controls-public-records\/","title":{"rendered":"What happens when a private company controls public records?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Albuquerque Journal has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/paperboy\/text\/news\/xgr\/032114265654newsxgr03-03-11.htm\" target=\"_blank\">an interesting article<\/a> on what happens when public records are controlled by a private company.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the cost to the public of inspecting and obtaining those records goes up dramatically as the relevant government agency and the private company use them to make money \u2013 at least in the case of the state\u2019s Motor Vehicle Division.<\/p>\n<p>Now, according to the Journal article, the Legislature is considering a bill that might change that.
