\"\"<\/a>Former New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid<\/a> has been in Iowa<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> campaigning for John Edwards<\/a> since Dec. 30, and what she\u2019s seen has made her optimistic that the former senator will win the state\u2019s caucus tonight. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing really well in the rural areas because we\u2019ve worked them hard,\u201d she said. \u201cRural areas take a lot of personal time.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Gov. Bill Richardson<\/a> and Sen. Joe Biden<\/a> are also expected to also make strong pushes in rural areas of the state, but Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> mentioned only Biden as a candidate the Edwards campaign is closely watching. In recent weeks, Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s support in Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> polls has fallen and Biden\u2019s has climbed, and the two are now statistically tied.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Madrid predicted that the caucus will come down to which frontrunner \u2013 Edwards, Hillary Clinton<\/a> or Barack Obama<\/a> \u2013 gets more support in the second round of voting from supporters of second-tier candidates who failed to reach the 15-percent threshold of viability in the first round. She claimed that Edwards is the top second choice of Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> caucus goers.<\/p>\n

\u201cEdwards and Hillary and Barack are so close that you have to look at what\u2019s going to happen with the second vote,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Madrid<\/st1:state> has had some up-close and personal time with Edwards while in Des Moines<\/st1:city><\/st1:place>. She saw him and his wife Elizabeth at a party on New Year\u2019s Eve and again the next day at a meeting with steelworker union members.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Then on Wednesday night Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> was backstage with Edwards, his wife and singer John Mellencamp<\/a> during a free concert the rock star put on for Edwards. More than 3,000 people attended, she said.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said campaigning has been \u201crough.\u201d It\u2019s freezing \u2013 sometimes below zero \u2013 and candidates and their supporters are working through fatigue.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is so exhausted,\u201d she said. \u201cI have such admiration for all the candidates, including Bill Richardson. It is so exhausting, what we put them through, and it\u2019s so cold there. People are still out there knocking on doors.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

In light of that, Madrid<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> said she was shocked to hear Edwards\u2019 speech at the Mellencamp concert.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe gave one of the most rousing, unbelievably transformational speeches I\u2019ve ever heard,\u201d she said. \u201cFor a candidate to do that at the end of this process in Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is just amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
