Earl Greer<\/a> formally announced today that he will run for the Second Congressional District seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/pearce.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Greer joins four Republicans who have announced candidacies for the seat. At least four other Republicans are considering running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In a news release, Greer said he is \u201cforging a new direction\u201d with a campaign he calls \u201cGrassroots for Greer.\u201d The release said the campaign will focus on a \u201cperson-to-person approach\u201d that involves one-on-one meetings with voters to discuss their concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Greer is a fifth-generation resident of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, is half Hispanic and is fluent in Spanish. He has run unsuccessfully in the past against Pearce, for a seat on the Public Regulation Commission and to be the state chair of the Republican Party. He has more than 29 years of experience in the real-estate industry and is part owner of Plaza Realty, which specializes in farm and ranch real-estate brokerage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said in the release that his campaign will focus on border security, immigration, the military, welfare, energy, traditional values, property and water rights and agriculture. Most are issues he spoke about <a href=\"http:\/\/haussamen.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/forum-reveals-wide-open-race-for-gop-in.html\">during a candidate forum<\/a> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Alamogordo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the release, Greer provided these statements on each issue:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Border security: \u201cLet\u2019s give every county sheriff\u2019s department the resources they need so they can work effectively in conjunction with our state and federal law enforcement to effectively protect our borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Immigration: \u201cAlthough immigration in <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> is a problem, we can accomplish much of what we want to by enforcing the immigration laws already in existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Military: \u201cWhile I am against increased spending, I would open up the checkbook to take care of our military. The government has an obligation to the members and veterans of our armed forces, disabled or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Welfare: \u201cI believe in a hand-up, not a hand-out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Energy: \u201cWe need to protect our domestic gas and oil industries as we wean our country from dependency on foreign oil, and I believe nuclear energy can ease that transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Traditional Values: \u201cI have been married for 31 years and have four married children and three wonderful grandchildren. Looking into my grandchildren\u2019s eyes, I know that I am running for Congress so I can help make the world safe and prosperous for them. I believe that traditional family values will carry us into the next era of our great country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Property rights and water rights: \u201cBecause I was raised on a ranch, I understand the importance of fighting for and protecting our private property rights and water rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022 Agriculture: \u201cI am prepared to protect and promote <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>\u2019s rich agricultural industry and history. I was born into agriculture and raised in agriculture, and I believe in agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The other Republicans in the race are former Bernalillo County GOP executive director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imbackingbob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Cornelius<\/a>, rancher and retired banker <a href=\"http:\/\/aubreydunn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aubrey L. Dunn Jr.<\/a>, restaurant-chain owner and rancher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edtinsleyforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Tinsley<\/a> and <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> daycare center owner Greg Sowards. Those considering the race include Clint Chandler, a staffer for U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici; Mike Kakuska, Second Congressional District vice chair for the state GOP; Hobbs Mayor Monty Newman; and former state Rep. Terry Marquardt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Four Democrats \u2013 retired Presbyterian pastor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> businessman and retired teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankmckinnonforcongress.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Frank McKinnon<\/a> and former Lea County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryteagueforcongress08.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> \u2013 are running.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sierra County Republican Party Chair C.
