{"id":2663,"date":"2007-12-20T09:05:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-20T15:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/afscme-endorses-udall-heinrich\/"},"modified":"2007-12-20T09:05:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-20T15:05:00","slug":"afscme-endorses-udall-heinrich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/afscme-endorses-udall-heinrich\/","title":{"rendered":"AFSCME endorses Udall, Heinrich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2qFFMTQ7GI\/AAAAAAAAES4\/fviBBgfZlC0\/s1600-h\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2qFFMTQ7GI\/AAAAAAAAES4\/fviBBgfZlC0\/s200\/Udall,+Tom.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146071848472079458\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afscme.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees<\/a>, which represents more than 12,000 government workers in New Mexico, has endorsed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall\u2019s<\/a> Senate run and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinheinrich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Heinrich\u2019s<\/a> First Congressional District bid.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The endorsements come with the resources and volunteers of a nationally powerful organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The union\u2019s political action committee voted unanimously Tuesday evening to endorse Udall \u201cbecause he has a strong track record of fighting for New Mexico\u2019s workers and has the experience we need,\u201d according to a news release from the union. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTom is a once-in-a-lifetime elected official. He is the type of person that we never have to second guess where he stands on workers\u2019 issues. He has always been with labor and we are very thankful for that,\u201d said AFSCME Executive Director Lawrence Rodriguez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Christine Serrano, a member of the union\u2019s PAC and a state employee, said Udall \u201chas been a wonderful representative for all of us in northern <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. We are going to miss him as our representative, but we all know he will make a great <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">U.S.<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> senator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2qFB8TQ7FI\/AAAAAAAAESw\/S8L1BzSbM-M\/s1600-h\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2qFB8TQ7FI\/AAAAAAAAESw\/S8L1BzSbM-M\/s200\/Heinrich,+Martin.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146071792637504594\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>In endorsing Heinrich\u2019s bid for Congress, the union stated in its news release that he has \u201cconsistently stood with the hard working people of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.\u201d His endorsement was also unanimous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cPoliticians always seem to talk the talk, but Martin walks the walk. He cares about the hard-working people of this state and has always fought by our side,\u201d said AFSCME President Andrew Padilla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Maria Gallegos, a member of the union\u2019s PAC and employee of an <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Albuquerque<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> water utility, said when city employees transitioned to the water authority, \u201cMartin made sure everyone would be taken care of and not a single employee would fall through the cracks. This is the type of person we need in Washington, someone that will make sure <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> doesn\u2019t fall through the cracks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The union won\u2019t make endorsements in the state\u2019s other congressional races until at least January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Udall is facing alternative media publisher and editor and activist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mothermedia.org\/2008platform.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Leland Lehrman<\/a> in the Democratic primary. The Republicans running for Senate are U.S. Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heatherforsenate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Wilson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Heinrich is facing high-school teacher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.call4democracy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Call<\/a> and former state Health Secretary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michellelujangrishamforcongress.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Lujan-Grisham<\/a> in the Democratic primary.
