{"id":2660,"date":"2007-12-19T15:13:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-19T21:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/richardson-tries-to-shift-the-debate-back-to-iraq\/"},"modified":"2007-12-19T15:13:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-19T21:13:00","slug":"richardson-tries-to-shift-the-debate-back-to-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/richardson-tries-to-shift-the-debate-back-to-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson tries to shift the debate back to Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2mJt8TQ7BI\/AAAAAAAAESQ\/ygyvL7z0XuM\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2mJt8TQ7BI\/AAAAAAAAESQ\/ygyvL7z0XuM\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145795471621549074\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>With his support in polls flatlining, at best, and 15 days remaining until the Jan. 3 Iowa Caucus, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> is unveiling a new television ad today that attempts to bring the debate back to the Iraq war and set him apart from the three frontrunners on the issue.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The new ad, which is running in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state>, does effectively get <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s point across that he\u2019s the only candidate with a plan to withdraw all troops during his first year in office. The ad lists some military experts who have endorsed his plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But the debate has shifted for a reason. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Edwards<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a> are talking more about the economy and less about <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> because polls have shown that the economy is increasingly the top concern of Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> tried to tie the two issues at the last debate, arguing that withdrawing from the expensive war would help the economy. In a news release announcing the new ad, he restated that position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> is the most important issue facing our country, but the national media and too many of my fellow candidates seem to have put it on the backburner,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can accomplish nothing on domestic issues, which the other candidates have shifted to, until we get all of our troops out of <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iraq<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> and actually end this war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s campaign is in trouble unless the new ad changes the minds of Democrats in the first states to hold presidential nominating contests. He has fallen behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebiden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/us\/democratic_presidential_nomination-191.html\" target=\"_blank\">Real Clear Politics Average of recent national polls<\/a>. Biden is at 3.1 percent, while <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is at 2.9 percent. On Dec. 10, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> was at 3.6 percent and Biden was at 3.4 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s average of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/ia\/iowa_democratic_caucus-208.html\" target=\"_blank\">recent polls in Iowa<\/a> today is 7.2 percent \u2013 down from 7.3 percent on Thursday. His average of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/nh\/new_hampshire_democratic_primary-194.html\" target=\"_blank\">recent polls in New Hampshire<\/a> is 7 percent \u2013 up from 6.6 percent on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You can read more about the ad by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/action.richardsonforpresident.com\/page\/content\/ads\/allout\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.
