{"id":2659,"date":"2007-12-19T11:36:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-19T17:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/sierra-county-to-vote-april-8-on-spaceport-tax\/"},"modified":"2007-12-19T11:36:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-19T17:36:00","slug":"sierra-county-to-vote-april-8-on-spaceport-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/sierra-county-to-vote-april-8-on-spaceport-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Sierra County to vote April 8 on spaceport tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2lWt8TQ7AI\/AAAAAAAAESI\/EcPYbbZvF7w\/s1600-h\/Spaceport+america.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2lWt8TQ7AI\/AAAAAAAAESI\/EcPYbbZvF7w\/s200\/Spaceport+america.gif\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145739396528532482\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Voters in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place> will decide on April 8 whether to approve a 1\/4 percent increase in the gross receipts tax to help fund <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spaceportamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spaceport America<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/270700nm12-19-07.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a> is reporting.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The election will be held just over a year after voters in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> narrowly approved a tax increase to help fund the spaceport. <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>\u2019s commissioners voted 3-0 on Thursday to schedule the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The tax, if approved, would only generate an estimated $2.3 million for the spaceport, but another county must join Do\u00f1a Ana in creating a spaceport tax district before the money from either county can be spent. The tax money generated in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place> is expected to provide about $49 million for the spaceport, or a quarter of its total cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The tax is expected to be a tough sell in the more conservative <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Sierra<\/st1:placename>  <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, but the county\u2019s manager, Janet Porter-Carrejo, sounds hopeful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe\u2019re cautiously optimistic about this and we certainly hope the voters will get out and vote for our community and the possible economic development opportunities,\u201d she was quoted by the Journal as saying.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Voters in Sierra County will decide on April 8 whether to approve a 1\/4 percent increase in the gross receipts tax to help fund Spaceport America, the Albuquerque Journal is reporting.
