Gomez to serve as acting secretary of Indian affairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gomez will serve while a search is conducted for a permanent secretary, according to a news release from <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City>\u2019s office. She replaces Benny Shendo, who left the job on Friday to run for Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gomez has been deputy secretary for the department since June 2006. She is a lifelong resident of the state and an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Isleta. Gomez earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in 1993 and master\u2019s degree in 1995, both in political science, from the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:PlaceType> of <st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:PlaceName><\/st1:place>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> thanked Shendo for his service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs the department\u2019s first cabinet-level secretary, which was created in 2004 as the first of its kind in the country, Benny Shendo has provided thoughtful leadership, and I\u2019m grateful for his service,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:City> said in the release.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
