J. Paul Taylor in Mesilla. Miyagishima was the District 6 councilor until he was elected mayor last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2Ao9bF27-I\/AAAAAAAAENQ\/ljbqGimB3Iw\/s1600-h\/Miyagishima,+Ken.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R2Ao9bF27-I\/AAAAAAAAENQ\/ljbqGimB3Iw\/s200\/Miyagishima,+Ken.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143155810166566882\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\u201cWhile I was running for mayor I had promised my District 6 residents that I would let them know who I support for my former office,\u201d Miyagishima said today. \u201cThat time is now and that person is Sharon \u2018Sherry\u2019 Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The other candidates are former Do\u00f1a Ana County Magistrate Judge Patrick J. Curran; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votejoy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Joy<\/a>, the owner of a direct mail advertising firm and the voice of NMSU\u2019s marching band; Berchard Ray Shipley, who has a background in the military, commercial property management and community planning; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karentrujillo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karen Trujillo<\/a>, a real-estate broker and president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hispanochamberlc.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Miyagishima said he has \u201cseveral friends\u201d in the race. He said Curran and Thomas helped his mayoral campaign, and Joy, for a fee, did his campaign mailing. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Trujillo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, he said, is a client of his insurance business, and Shipley is someone who is on Miyagishima\u2019s e-mail newsletter list. The mayor said he is confident he could work with any of the candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHowever, as evidenced by the recent elections, responsible growth is a key issue not only throughout the city but as well in District 6,\u201d Miyagishima said. \u201cI believe District 6 residents want someone with strong land-use experience, while being able to balance the needs of both the residents and business community.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima is backing Sharon Thomas, former head of the Quality Growth Alliance, in the Jan. 15 special election for the District 6 seat on the city council.
