Gonzales<\/a>, an attorney who spent 10 years working for U.S. Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/domenici.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Domenici<\/a> as a defense appropriations specialist, has decided to run for the Third Congressional District seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have decided to respectfully offer my background and experience to the people of <st1:place st=\"on\">Northern New Mexico<\/st1:place> and the 3rd CD for consideration as a candidate for Congress,\u201d he confirmed in an e-mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales said a formal announcement will be made in the next 10 days or so in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, where he was born and currently lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales called Domenici \u201ca great mentor and friend,\u201d and said he is \u201cbattle-tested from the experience of working for Pete on issues like saving Kirtland, maintaining force structure and infrastructure at Cannon AFB and fighting for the defense budgets at our military bases and national laboratories.\u201d He also worked on judiciary, commerce, state and justice issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Asked about issues in his campaign, Gonzales said \u201ca top priority will be saving the Los Alamos National Laboratory from the frontal assault being levied on it from <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> budget cutters in the House of Representatives who have no idea what a national treasure it truly is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales said he \u201ccannot believe Tom Udall never once had key decision makers out here to educate them. He simply acquiesced to their cuts without a serious fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe sent the signal early it was OK to cut and they ran with it all the way to the devastation we see happening now,\u201d Gonzales said. \u201cOnce it\u2019s gone, you can\u2019t reconstitute the asset again easily, and the numbers crunchers in the House are looking at short-term results to meet other spending priorities. Bad policy for <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>. Horrible results for the people of <st1:place st=\"on\">Northern New Mexico<\/st1:place>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales said his experience means he understands the inner-workings of federal agencies, and he \u201cwill not need any on-the-job training when it comes to fighting for <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> programs administered within.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He also said many people living in the district need help with Medicare, Medicaid, veterans\u2019 claims and health care and other services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThe problem is the federal government makes the forms and applications so hard to fill out and confusing that many people lose out on these and other benefits and care they deserve,\u201d Gonzales said. \u201cI am going to make constituent services a pillar of my service to the district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales is a partner at the state\u2019s oldest and largest law firm, Modrall Sperling. He earned his law degree in 1998 from <st1:placename st=\"on\">Georgetown<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> and has a bachelor\u2019s degree from Catholic University of America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gonzales pointed out that he has deep family roots in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u2013 Democratic roots. To have a shot at defeating a Democratic candidate in the liberal district, he\u2019s going to need such help. Gonzales has a long history of activity in the Republican Party, including taking visible rolls in President Bush\u2019s 2000 and 2004 campaigns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At least two other Republicans are considering entering the race, but Gonzales is the first to announce his candidacy. Three Democrats \u2013 Santa Fe County Commissioner Harry Montoya, state Indian Affairs Secretary Benny Shendo Jr. and <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> green builder <a href=\"http:\/\/donfornewmexico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Wiviott<\/a> \u2013 have entered the race, and others are considering it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Marco E.
