{"id":2610,"date":"2007-12-06T17:42:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-06T23:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/council-hopeful-has-real-estate-planning-experience\/"},"modified":"2007-12-06T17:42:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-06T23:42:00","slug":"council-hopeful-has-real-estate-planning-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/council-hopeful-has-real-estate-planning-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Council hopeful has real estate, planning experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R113WLF27xI\/AAAAAAAAELo\/Y7QsoI7d81s\/s1600-h\/Shipley,+Ray.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R113WLF27xI\/AAAAAAAAELo\/Y7QsoI7d81s\/s200\/Shipley,+Ray.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142397572345163538\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A Las Crucen with a background in the military, commercial property management and community planning wants to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/mayor.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a>, who was elected mayor of <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Las   Cruces<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> earlier this month, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/Council_6.gif\" target=\"_blank\">District 6<\/a> city councilor.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Berchard Ray Shipley said he\u2019s running because he wants to help his community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThat\u2019s always been my belief, that you give back to the community where you live,\u201d Shipley said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The special election is being held Jan. 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R4zGIMTQ8wI\/AAAAAAAAEgM\/skPdY6XVb6A\/s1600-h\/SpecialElectionLogo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R4zGIMTQ8wI\/AAAAAAAAEgM\/skPdY6XVb6A\/s200\/SpecialElectionLogo.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155713517475656450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Shipley is the only candidate who didn\u2019t send out an announcement before he filed to run on Tuesday. The other candidates in the race are former Do\u00f1a Ana County Magistrate Judge Patrick J. Curran; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votejoy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Joy<\/a>, the owner of a direct mail advertising firm and the voice of NMSU\u2019s marching band; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharonthomasforcitycouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sharon Thomas<\/a>, former head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/qga-nm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quality Growth Alliance<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karentrujillo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karen Trujillo<\/a>, a real-estate broker and president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hispanochamberlc.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Shipley, who is originally from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Anderson<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">Ind.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place>, retired from the Army in 1989 after 23 years. He then began working as a commercial property manager on the East and West coasts, managing office buildings, shopping centers and business parks. During a stint in <st1:state st=\"on\">California<\/st1:state>, Shipley spent six years on the planning commission for the city of <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Brentwood<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, including three years as the commission\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">His son\u2019s family lives in <st1:city st=\"on\">El Paso<\/st1:city>, and two years ago he and his wife decided to retire and move to <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> to be near them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Shipley said his experience in Brentwood qualifies him to deal with one of the main issues in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las   Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> \u2013 growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI firmly believe in managed growth,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving experience with the planning commission, I know how to make that work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of the main concerns with growth is ensuring the city has adequate infrastructure to keep up, Shipley said.
