\"\"<\/a>Former state Rep. Terry Marquardt, R-Alamogordo, is considering running for the Second Congressional District seat being vacated by Steve Pearce<\/a>. <\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Though I\u2019ve been unable to reach Marquardt for confirmation or other comment, he has confirmed his attendance at a forum next week in Alamogordo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> for GOP candidates and potential candidates for the seat. He\u2019s also been telling area Republicans that he\u2019s considering running.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Marquardt, an optometrist, served 12 years in the state House of Representatives and was the minority whip until he was defeated last year by challenger Nate Cote<\/a>, D-Las Cruces.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

After his defeat, Marquardt hinted at a future political comeback. And, according to the Alamogordo Daily News<\/a>, he gave a speech last week in Alamogordo<\/st1:city> about \u201cthe battle for America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s values,\u201d covering topics including faith, terrorism and a push by some to remove the words \u201cunder God\u201d from the Pledge of Allegiance.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 an arrogant and secular elite, backed by a powerful judiciary that holds itself supreme over the executive and legislative branches, is waging a war against God and our public life,\u201d the <\/span>newspaper quoted Marquardt as saying. \u201cIt is a war to define America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> down, to change the character of our nation. This change would be something that the men and women who founded this nation wouldn\u2019t recognize.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

\u201cWinning the battle for America<\/st1:country-region>\u2019s values means reaffirming that America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> was founded on the recognition that our liberties come from our creator and that our continued prosperity rests, as George Washington put it in his farewell address, on the indispensable supports of religion and morality,\u201d the newspaper quoted Marquardt as saying.<\/p>\n

<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Cote\u2019s margin of victory last year was slim \u2013 199 votes, or 2.8 percent \u2013 and he outspent Marquardt, with the help of Democratic leaders in Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, by $12,000. Cote<\/st1:place> ran a much more active campaign, walking more neighborhoods and sending out more mailers than Marquardt.<\/p>\n
