{"id":2597,"date":"2007-12-04T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-04T23:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/politically-active-law-student-may-run-for-congress\/"},"modified":"2007-12-04T17:30:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-04T23:30:00","slug":"politically-active-law-student-may-run-for-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/politically-active-law-student-may-run-for-congress\/","title":{"rendered":"Politically active law student may run for Congress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1XjNLF27aI\/AAAAAAAAEIw\/_f5L5MGzj48\/s1600-h\/Consuegra,+William.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1XjNLF27aI\/AAAAAAAAEIw\/_f5L5MGzj48\/s200\/Consuegra,+William.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140264365168455074\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>A politically active <a href=\"http:\/\/lawschool.unm.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of New Mexico School of Law<\/a> student is adding his name to the list of people considering running for the Third Congressional District seat being vacated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Consuegra\" target=\"_blank\">William Consuegra<\/a> is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificcouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Council on International Policy<\/a>, whose membership includes political figures from around the world, and was nominated by Gov. Bill Richardson and former UNM President Louis Caldera to the prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Council on Foreign Relations<\/a> in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New York<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>. He\u2019s also a member of the New Mexico Commission on Public Broadcasting, having been nominated to that position by <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI have been in conversations with my wife regarding a possible run, and I will make a decision over the holidays after discussing it further with my extended family (my parents and my in-laws) as well as with some friends who know a bit more about New Mexico politics than I do,\u201d Consuegra said today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Consuegra\u2019s wife, Mikelynn Romero, is from Velarde and is a niece of the president of Qwest-New Mexico, Loretta Armenta. Romero used to work for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dscc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee<\/a> in <st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state>, and Consuegra travels to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> every year to work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cns.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Corporation for National and Community Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Consuegra moved to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> in 2005 to attend law school, and is in his third year. He said <st1:state st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:state> has \u201cbecome my home,\u201d and he and his wife own property in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Rio<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Arriba<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI believe that <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> is at a tipping point \u2013 about to break through and become the most innovative state in the country in various industries,\u201d he said. \u201cI am excited about the developments I have seen in environmental initiatives, renewable energy, planned communities, transportation and communication and, as Richard Florida pointed out in his book \u2018Rise of the Creative Class,\u2019 the continued emergence of the creative class in New Mexico. But we need the right leadership at this crucial time to ensure that <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> takes that next step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Consuegra said he\u2019s also concerned about \u201cthe future of the state\u2019s youngest region,\u201d and said Velarde \u201chas been a focal point of some fierce battles between community groups and mining companies.\u201d He said tourism, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the San Juan\/Chama River drinking project, poverty, education and growth are among concerns of residents in the congressional district, \u201cand I believe that, through a shared vision, northern New Mexico can continue being the most beautiful part of the state while embracing innovation and growth and an increase in the economy through entrepreneurship, education and technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe need to work as a state to make sure every student receives the best education possible, graduates from high school and finds an opportunity for education or vocational training to meet the future labor needs of the state,\u201d Consuegra said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A politically active University of New Mexico School of Law student is adding his name to the list of people considering running for the Third Congressional District seat being vacated by Tom Udall.
