{"id":2592,"date":"2007-12-03T17:41:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-03T23:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/activist-to-run-for-district-6-council-seat\/"},"modified":"2007-12-03T17:41:00","modified_gmt":"2007-12-03T23:41:00","slug":"activist-to-run-for-district-6-council-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/12\/activist-to-run-for-district-6-council-seat\/","title":{"rendered":"Activist to run for District 6 council seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1SVXrF27WI\/AAAAAAAAEIQ\/_-deNNhY2Y4\/s1600-R\/Thomas,+Sharon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1SVXrF27WI\/AAAAAAAAEIQ\/xoXOSczjnVI\/s200\/Thomas,+Sharon.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139897308673404258\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharonthomasforcitycouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sharon Thomas<\/a>, former head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/qga-nm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quality Growth Alliance<\/a>, has announced her candidacy for the open <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haussamen.com\/Council_6.gif\" target=\"_blank\">District 6<\/a> seat on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces City Council<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One of her main goals is to \u201cfully involve the city and its citizens in planning our future,\u201d according to a news release from her campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201c<st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is rapidly transforming itself from a big town to a city,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cWe can continue to be reactive, waiting until subdivisions appear and then trying to find a way to cobble them together to make a city, or we can work together to study growth patterns, predict future land use and become good stewards of a vibrant and successful city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R4zGIMTQ8wI\/AAAAAAAAEgM\/skPdY6XVb6A\/s1600-h\/SpecialElectionLogo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R4zGIMTQ8wI\/AAAAAAAAEgM\/skPdY6XVb6A\/s200\/SpecialElectionLogo.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155713517475656450\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Thomas joins former Do\u00f1a Ana County Magistrate Judge Patrick J. Curran; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votejoy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Joy<\/a>, the owner of a direct mail advertising firm and the voice of NMSU\u2019s marching band; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.karentrujillo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karen Trujillo<\/a>, a real-estate broker and president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hispanochamberlc.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces<\/a>, in the race. The special election is being held Jan. 15 to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/council\/mayor.shtm\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a>, who was elected mayor earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Candidates will file to run on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Thomas said she is interested in \u201cplanning for prosperity,\u201d saying a good quality of life brings economic dividends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cA well-planned community attracts companies that offer well-paying jobs, and well-paying jobs are the basis for a strong economy,\u201d she said. \u201cThoughtful planning can also help reduce traffic congestion, prevent crime and address the need for neighborhood parks and affordable housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Thomas is a retired educator. She was one of the original owners of the Red Mountain Caf\u00e9 when it opened in 1998. She helped found the Quality Growth Alliance earlier this year, but has resigned from her position as president of its board. She has also been involved in other community groups and boards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">She is married to Dick Thomas, also a retired educator. Their son Severn received a master\u2019s degree in anthropology from <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">New Mexico<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">State<\/st1:placetype> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype><\/st1:place>, and their daughter Caerllion is completing work on her master\u2019s degree in geography at NMSU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharon Thomas, former head of the Quality Growth Alliance, has announced her candidacy for the open District 6 seat on the Las Cruces City Council.
