Across the state, local governments must also create a process for drawing new boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>For the City of Las Cruces and Do\u00f1a Ana County, that process is already underway. The Las Cruces Sun-News <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_17315015\">is reporting<\/a> that the city has hired <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpinc.com\/\">Research and Polling<\/a> of Albuquerque \u2013 which also works for the state on redistricting \u2013 to \u201cstudy the city\u2019s demographics and design three proposals for redrawing districts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Do\u00f1a Ana County plans to hire the same firm.<\/p>\n<p>Southern New Mexico Common Cause is pushing for both governments to consider creating five-person, bipartisan citizen panels to be involved in the process. Former County Commissioner Bill McCamley presented the proposal on behalf of Common Cause to county commissioners today.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioners appeared to be open to the idea.<\/p>\n<p>The city may be more skeptical. City Manager Robert Garza was quoted by the Sun-News as saying the city will \u201ccertainly listen to (Common Cause) with an open mind, but the path we\u2019re on is to fulfill the contractual obligations with Research and Polling. It\u2019s completely independent.
