Moore won&#8217;t seek re-election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1CdN7F27OI\/AAAAAAAAEHQ\/ffzMqjth2lg\/s1600-R\/Moore,+Brian.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1CdN7F27OI\/AAAAAAAAEHQ\/du9g0xCjYIs\/s200\/Moore,+Brian.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138780037355859170\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=212&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Moore<\/a>, R-Clayton, announced today that he will leave the Legislature when his current term ends in December 2008.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The decision opens a third seat in the state House currently held by a lawmaker who has been part of a bipartisan coalition that often stood up to the speaker during this year\u2019s session. <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, 55, said the 2008 session will be his eighth, and it\u2019s time for new blood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI think the time is right for me. Eight years is a long time,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/DistrictMaps\/2002HouseDistricts\/House67.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">District 67<\/a> representative said. \u201cI told some folks in Tucumcari last night that I was going to go into political rehab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said Dennis Roch, assistant superintendent of the Tucumcari schools, plans to run for his seat. In addition, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said some Republicans have called to encourage him to run for the Third Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udallforusall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Udall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s flattering that people call,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cI would be disingenuous if I said I wasn\u2019t thinking about it some, but I think it\u2019d be a tough situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Even if his consideration of the congressional race isn\u2019t that serious, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moo<\/st1:place><\/st1:city><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">re<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is the second Republican to say publicly that he\u2019s thinking about running for the left-leaning seat. The other is Los Alamos National Laboratory engineer Ron Dolin, who ran unsuccessfully against Udall last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/governor.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> said in a statement released by his office that he is \u201csorry to see Brian leave the Legislature, but I understand and respect his decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBrian was a statesman who put the interests of New Mexicans ahead of partisan politics,\u201d <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city><\/st1:place> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">House Minority Whip <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=190&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Foley<\/a> of <st1:city st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:city> said <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has been \u201ca phenomenal leader and a key player,\u201d and said his departure will be \u201ca major loss to our caucus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said one of the factors in his decision was the pay, or lack thereof, for lawmakers. He said it\u2019s tough to serve without compensation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said he\u2019s looking forward to the debate on proposed changes to the school-funding formula in what will be his last legislative session next year. The proposal, which aims to more fairly distribute money, is one of the best proposals he\u2019s seen in his time in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cSo it will be fun. Health care will be fun. Cervantes is leaving the House to run for Congress. Wirth is leaving to run for the state Senate. Along with Moore and others, they often crossed party lines this year to form a coalition the speaker couldn\u2019t override. Most visible was their successful push for reform of the state\u2019s housing authority system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt is kind of tough to see Peter go to the Senate and Joseph run for Congress,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Moore<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cThe House will really miss those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1CdObF27QI\/AAAAAAAAEHg\/8kYTknyo0P0\/s1600-R\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/R1CdObF27QI\/AAAAAAAAEHg\/sYE_6FqhqLI\/s200\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138780045945793794\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>Foley agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs a group, I hate to see Wirth and Cervantes and Moore leave, because you finally start to see some of these guys stand up to the speaker and the institutional corruption,\u201d Foley said, but he added that he believes some others are starting to stand up as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cBut losing them is going to hurt the Legislature,\u201d Foley said. \u201cWirth is one of the most liberal guys in the Legislature.
