That made it\u00a0the 19th most-read post in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The commentary cut through the political spin to explain how the state toughened penalties for fatal child abuse in 2003. It was a topic of interest in 2016 because of several\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/09\/grieving-then-moving-into-action-after-victorias-death\/\" target=\"_blank\">horrific crimes<\/a>. A bill\u00a0that would have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2016\/09\/crime-bills-advance-amid-debate-about-purpose-of-special-session\/\" target=\"_blank\">further\u00a0toughened child abuse penalties<\/a>\u00a0failed to gain approval during a special session of the N.M.
