{"id":25452,"date":"2011-01-26T17:47:09","date_gmt":"2011-01-27T00:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/?p=25452"},"modified":"2011-01-27T07:39:05","modified_gmt":"2011-01-27T14:39:05","slug":"connor-enters-las-cruces-mayoral-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2011\/01\/connor-enters-las-cruces-mayoral-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Connor enters Las Cruces mayoral race"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_25453\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 270px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25453 \" title=\"Connor, Dolores1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Connor-Dolores1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dolores Connor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Las Cruces City Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/las-cruces.org\/Council\/District2.shtm\">Dolores Connor<\/a> announced today that she\u2019s challenging Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/las-cruces.org\/council\/mayor.shtm\">Ken Miyagishima<\/a> for the city\u2019s top job this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy experience and commitment will bring a new kind of mayor to Las Cruces &#8211; a mayor that first seeks commonsense to solutions and not the latest fad or another report to sit on a shelf,\u201d Connor said at a news conference, according to prepared remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Connor said she would be \u201ca mayor that understands that we have many experts living in our own community \u2013 they should be combined with our staff, adding knowledge on how we grow Las Cruces, recognizing our past and how we step into the future; a mayor that wants everyone to have a chance to be successful; and a mayor that is humbled everyday by the opportunity to serve the citizens of my favorite city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nov. 8 municipal election is nonpartisan, but Connor is a Republican and Miyagishima is a Democrat. No other candidiates have entered the race.<\/p>\n<p>Connor represents District 2 on the city council. She was first elected in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. Miyagishima, a former councilor, is completing his first term as mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Connor, who called herself a fiscal conservative, said the city needs to reduce red tape and become more business-friendly, which she said would bring money into the city\u2019s coffers. Pointing to cuts the city has had to make in recent years, she said the city is at the point where some departments can\u2019t be cut further.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Connor singled out public safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to have officers and firefighters on the streets, with good equipment and resources to fund operations,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need an additional fire\/police station in the eastern part of our city, and you have heard me more than once insist that a new 9-1-1 center is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor, a third-generation Las Crucen, is a graduate of Mayfield High School who started and later became vice president of a local savings and loan company. She has also been an owner and partner in a local retail business.<\/p>\n<p>Connor served as mayor pro-tem from 2005 to 2007.
