{"id":2527,"date":"2007-11-13T01:12:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-13T07:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/cervantes-says-he-will-stand-on-principle-in-congress\/"},"modified":"2007-11-13T01:12:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-13T07:12:00","slug":"cervantes-says-he-will-stand-on-principle-in-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/cervantes-says-he-will-stand-on-principle-in-congress\/","title":{"rendered":"Cervantes says he will stand on principle in Congress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzlNy1y4ZOI\/AAAAAAAAD_8\/kA62Ro98cTU\/s1600-h\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzlNy1y4ZOI\/AAAAAAAAD_8\/kA62Ro98cTU\/s200\/Cervantes,+Joseph.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5132218786194679010\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>State Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=186&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Joseph Cervantes<\/a>, D-Las Cruces, told a crowd of some 200 people on Monday evening that he\u2019s running for Congress because <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:state st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> needs more leaders who \u2013 like him \u2013 are willing to act on principle and with conviction.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Such leaders, he said, will help restore <st1:country-region st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">America<\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>\u2019s position as a beacon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI believe the most important task today in <st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>, <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state> is to recapture that role of the <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:country-region st=\"on\">United States<\/st1:country-region><\/st1:place> in the world,\u201d Cervantes said. \u201c\u2026 I want to represent you in Congress because there are not enough people in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Washington<\/st1:city>,  <st1:state st=\"on\">D.C.<\/st1:state><\/st1:place> today who are willing to risk the political consequences by standing on principal and political convictions, but I think we need at least one more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The kickoff of Cervantes\u2019 bid to replace U.S. Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peopleforpearce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, R-N.M., who is vacating the seat to run for Senate, was held at the Farm and <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ranch<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Heritage<\/st1:placename> <st1:placetype st=\"on\">Museum<\/st1:placetype> in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and attended by about 20 elected officials, a number of family members and other supporters. The enthusiastic crowd cheered frequently as Cervantes and others spoke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cervantes joins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kisslingforcongress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Al Kissling<\/a> of <st1:city st=\"on\">Las Cruces<\/st1:city>, Do\u00f1a Ana County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmccamley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill McCamley<\/a>, <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Roswell<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> businessman Frank McKinnon and former Lea County Commissioner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harryteagueforcongress08.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Teague<\/a> in the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">On the Republican side, only GOP restaurant-chain owner and rancher Ed Tinsley has formally entered the race, but former Bernalillo County GOP Executive Director Bob Cornelius has formed an exploratory committee and intends to run. Sierra County Republican Party Chair <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlgreer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">C. Earl Greer<\/a> and Aubrey L. Dunn Jr. are expected to make final decisions soon, and others are also considering the race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cervantes spoke on Monday evening about the importance of leading by example and of working with legislative colleagues to make a difference. He said his seven years in the state Legislature sets him apart from other candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIn this day and age, it\u2019s not a time for us to send people to Congress who don\u2019t have that background,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a time to go learn the political process. It\u2019s not a time to go learn the legislative process. The needs of our country are immediate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Big-name supporters<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cervantes had previously released a long list of endorsements that included House Majority Leader <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=210&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Martinez<\/a> and state Reps. <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=191&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Helen Garcia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=201&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Dona Irwin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=215&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Al Park<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/legis.state.nm.us\/lcs\/legdetails.asp?Name=303&amp;Submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Wirth<\/a>. Also on the list were former Gov. Jerry Apodaca, former state Rep. J. Paul Taylor, New Mexico State University Regent Laura Conniff, Mesilla Mayor Michael Cadena, Mesilla Trustees Jesus Caro and Nora Barrazas and Do\u00f1a Ana County Commission Chairwoman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/commissioners\/district3\" target=\"_blank\">Karen Perez<\/a> \u2013 a significant endorsement in part because she is a colleague of McCamley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many of those officials were present for the announcement, and some spoke to the group about Cervantes. McCamley colleagues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/commissioners\/district4\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Evans<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donaanacounty.org\/commissioners\/district1\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar V\u00e1squez Butler<\/a> also attended Cervantes\u2019 announcement but said they were not endorsing him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Taylor<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, in speaking about Cervantes to the crowd, said he \u201chas a great heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cHe will not let you down,\u201d <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Taylor<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> said. \u201cHe will be there for the poor and the sick and the hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Irwin said voters should choose Cervantes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIf you want someone that is honest and who has integrity, then you want Joseph,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Also speaking favorably about Cervantes was Robert E. Robles, chief judge of the Third Judicial District Court in <st1:place st=\"on\"><st1:placename st=\"on\">Do\u00f1a<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">Ana<\/st1:placename> <st1:placename st=\"on\">County<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>. He called Cervantes \u201cthe epitome of professionalism\u201d and said he \u201cis intelligent, he is honest, he is personable and he knows how to lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cJoseph, you have earned my respect,\u201d Robles said. \u201cYou have all the qualities to be a great leader, and I\u2019m so pleased to be here with you today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The state\u2019s Code of Judicial Conduct forbids judges from endorsing political candidates. Asked afterward whether he was endorsing Cervantes, Robles said he was not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI was just speaking from the heart about someone I\u2019ve known a long time,\u201d Robles said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Juggling campaigning, legislative duties<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cervantes said in an interview after the event that he doesn\u2019t plan to shut down his law practice, and does plan to participate in the 2008 legislative session. Still, he said, he and his family are committed to campaigning \u201cfull-time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said that will be a challenge during the 30-day session, but he plans to sponsor fewer bills than he has in the past, and said he will spend some of his time in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> meeting with people from throughout the Second Congressional District who also travel there for the session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Other times, he said, he\u2019ll miss portions of the session, just like Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> does when he\u2019s on the presidential campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">\u2018We had to try to change things\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Asked when and how he decided to run, Cervantes said he and his family made the decision during the summer that he would seek this seat \u201cwhen the time was right.\u201d Pearce\u2019s decision to run for Senate made this the right time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cervantes said one of his daughters was in a serious horseback riding accident in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Colorado<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> during the summer and fractured her skull. She was moved from one hospital to another and required a number of expensive tests and procedures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">He said he and his wife discussed, at some point during that ordeal, the fact that they could afford such medical care but many others could not. In part because of that, improving the health-care system is at the top of his priority list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cWe knew that we had to try to change things for the better, and there were better opportunities than the New Mexico Legislature,\u201d Cervantes said. \u201cWe decided then that we would do this when the chance arose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Supporters wrote checks to Cervantes during Monday\u2019s event, but he said he would not release a fundraising total for the evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cTonight is not about money,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size:130%;\">Watch his speech<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Here is video of most of Cervantes\u2019 speech.
