{"id":2521,"date":"2007-11-09T18:21:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-10T00:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/richardson-bets-everything-on-iowa-new-hampshire\/"},"modified":"2007-11-09T18:21:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-10T00:21:00","slug":"richardson-bets-everything-on-iowa-new-hampshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmpolitics.net\/index\/2007\/11\/richardson-bets-everything-on-iowa-new-hampshire\/","title":{"rendered":"Richardson bets everything on Iowa, New Hampshire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzT5xFy4ZJI\/AAAAAAAAD_U\/wmCwJoXyedA\/s1600-h\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_IabUCQmoheQ\/RzT5xFy4ZJI\/AAAAAAAAD_U\/wmCwJoXyedA\/s200\/Richardsonforpresident.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131000497246332050\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>With 54 days until the Iowa Caucus on Jan. 3, Gov. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardsonforpresident.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Richardson<\/a> is putting everything he has into <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> as he makes a final push in his underdog bid for the presidency.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Earlier this week, <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> moved 10 staffers from <st1:state st=\"on\">Nevada<\/st1:state> to <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, weakening his organization in a state he once called critical. <st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city> also moved some staffers from <st1:state st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:state> to <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state>, but replaced them with staffers from the campaign headquarters in <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Santa Fe<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>. Overall, that increased the number of staffers in both <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Then today, Campaign Manager Dave Contarino sent an e-mail to supporters announcing that the campaign plans to spend $1.2 million on advertising in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> this month, which he wrote would match the totals spent by the better-funded campaigns of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillaryclinton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barack Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">How is that possible? Contarino wrote that \u201cthere is only so much media to be bought in <st1:state st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:state> and <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>, which is why we\u2019re concentrating our energy there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Of course, the letter asks for more funding. The campaign has $950,000 for the ad buy but needs another $250,000 by Thanksgiving so \u201cwe can match <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Clinton<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> and Obama ad-for-ad,\u201d Contarino wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cAs this point, the only issue is money,\u201d Contarino wrote. \u201cWe have the candidate. We have the message. We have the momentum. And with your help, we can have the nomination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The date of the <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">New   Hampshire<\/st1:place><\/st1:state> primary hasn\u2019t been set, but it will likely be held shortly after the Iowa Caucus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:city>\u2019s Real Clear Politics average of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/ia\/iowa_democratic_caucus-208.html\" target=\"_blank\">recent polls in Iowa<\/a> remains at 7.8 percent. His average of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/nh\/new_hampshire_democratic_primary-194.html\" target=\"_blank\">recent polls in New Hampshire<\/a> is 6.8 percent. But that doesn\u2019t mean he has no shot at the nomination. Anything can happen in <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Iowa<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> has said he has to place third or better there. According to the Associated Press, \u201cA senior Iowa Democrat who backs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnedwards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">(John) Edwards<\/a> is telling important people around the state that (<st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>) will beat one of the top three Democrats on Jan. 3 \u2014 Clinton, Obama or Edwards \u2014 and drive that person from the race. A few others say the spoiler role could go to Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebiden.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Biden<\/a> of <st1:state st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Delaware<\/st1:place><\/st1:state>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Associated Press writer also had this to say about <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cYou\u2019re filling rooms in Iowa and finding ways to remind voters that you have the best r\u00e9sum\u00e9 in the race (New Mexico governor and former diplomat, congressman and Cabinet member),\u201d he wrote. \u201cYour rambling stump speech and quirky sense of humor fuel a much-deserved reputation for being undisciplined, but you\u2019re connecting with voters on a level that the more polished rivals cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This has been <st1:city st=\"on\"><st1:place st=\"on\">Richardson<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u2019s strategy all along. It\u2019s not likely that he\u2019ll win the nomination, but it\u2019s also too early to count him out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With 54 days until the Iowa Caucus on Jan. 3, Gov.
