The city\u2019s municipal code requires that candidates be sworn in within 14 days of the results becoming official, which happened on Thursday, but state law requires that they be sworn in within six days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Outgoing Mayor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billmattiace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Mattiace<\/a> and others who voters replaced on Tuesday remain in office until Nov. 19. In the meantime, according to the city\u2019s news release announcing today\u2019s action, \u201cno policy making meetings requiring official city council actions are scheduled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cIt\u2019s no big deal,\u201d Miyagishima said of today\u2019s ceremony. \u201cI just got it done with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But Miyagishima and two other candidates who were sworn in today \u2013 District 1 Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvafordistrict1.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Miguel Silva<\/a> and District 4 Councilor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nathan4district4.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Small<\/a> \u2013 have pledged to increase public involvement in city government, and today\u2019s was the official swearing-in, which is a big deal to some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In the future, the newly elected officials would be wise to ensure the public knows about such events before they take place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ken Miyagishima officially holds the title of Las Cruces mayor after he and the other candidates who won Tuesday\u2019s municipal election were sworn in today.
